    Help Photo question

I'm going to go to Rivington tonight to shoot all the fireworks from across Bolton. (if the weather permits of course). With it being bonfire night, i should think there will be a few in the sky lol.

Basically i have a point and shoot and you can change certain things. Should i just stick it in night mode and shoot. or play with the apertures and shutter speeds.

Ill be taking a tripod. and some gloves lol

P.S. I figured its photography, so i stuck it in this section. Otherwise it would have gone in the dog and duck.

    or the hardware section?

tripod is a must.if you can set a timer so you dont get any movement with the point & click would be better.it is hard to get the timming right with it.qiuck shutter speed would be good.unles you want long trails then long shutter speed for that.just have a go & see what comes out.you may take 150 - 200 shots but only about 5% maybe of any use.
you will not no till you try.good luck

Firework mode is probably going to be a slow shutter speed - at least it is on my wife's casio...

If you can hold the shutter open for a long period take a piece of black card with you.
Keep the shutter open for several fireworks going off but place the black over the lens in between fireworks so you don't pull to much background light, that way the background should remain largely black and you will have multiple firework explosions in one image..
It's a lot easier to do with a DSLR and bulb mode, but should work with a point and shoot..

This is one I did last year.

Also a decent tripod is a must. Also don't try and guess where they will explode, take a nice wide angle on the explosions and just crop out the bit's around it in PS afterwords.

Another funky thing to do is hand hold the camera and shoot with along exposure but move the camera around a little so the firework trail is all over the place, it can sometime give some real neat effects.

    Like this

Hope that helps mate and look forward to seeing them laters...

I saw your reply regarding the camera settings.

Use ISO 100, the 7.1 F Stop and around 2 - 4 seconds exposure. If it's a little too dark, change the ISO to 200.

Check out the shots I took at the Fireworks championships in Southport. http://www.digital-forums.com/showthread.php?t=318412. You can see the results you can get with similar settings.

Please feel free to have a look at the EXIF data to see the exposure information etc.
Save an image, right click on the file, go to properties > summary and then advanced. All the info is in there.

    great pics there.

Unfortunately i couldnt get any pictures, I wasnt driving, and the person who was driving couldnt find any place to stop and park up. It was packed up there. Besides i feared getting my camera robbed if i set it up. We just ended up driving round in circles around belmont. I saw a few posible places but there was no where to park, and the women who i was with didnt fancy walking in the cold.

so maybe next time ey. maybe i will see if i get a snowy picture up there when it (if it) snows

    LOL

Lesson #1 - Women and photography sometimes do not mix . Especially if there's lots of walking and cold weather

I took a couple tonight but they're not great. Too many people in front and it's a shame because the setting was very nice.

I'll crop 'em and post a few either tonight or tomorrow.
