Some candids I shot on the weekend...

I was out with the family last weekend at Plessey Woods in Cramlington and tried to get some candids of the little fella. The light was really not suitable but these were the ones that came out a little better than the rest...

Hi m8.

The focus is out on 2 and 4. Shame, cos the last is the best.

They are all nice record shots, but just need a little more light on them.

EG. On the last one, you shot at 1/50th @ f.5/.6 at ISO 200. With the 400D, you can easily use ISO 400 - the noise is held well at that level which will allow you to use f8 comfortable and have more Dof and focus.

A touch of fill in flash would also have helped, setting it at -2EV to lift the shadows.

In PS, use levels to lift the pictures a touch too.

Unfortunately, I spent the afternoon focused (see what I did there?) more on keeping my son out of the stream than on setting up the shots. I should really have checked the light first and set up properly. You're absolutely right that I could have bumped the ISO to 400 without introducing any more noise. I guess that would have allowed me to shoot at f8 or 1/100 to get the shots crisper.

I did actually enhance the shots in Lightroom, and still in RAW they were looking ok. Since converting to jpg, and downsizing, they lost alot of the touch ups... Nevermind, I've learned a lot from it. Interestingly, I have never really used a flash properly and would benefit from a quick run down on how you use the cam settings to optimise the flash, as in:

- by fill in flash, I assume you mean using it to compensate for low light rather than being the actual light source. To do that, do you just set the flash exp compensation down to make it less intesnse, or is there a setting for fill flash on the cam?
- Is there any other way to control the flash short of buying an expensive flash with custom settings on the flash itself?
