glad ya got it sorted m8. I'd advise anyone with a network branded phone to do the same thing. Orange even take out the internet calls option in there firmware as well. Think it's absolute bollocks that the networks see fit to disable key features on a phone and manage to slow the thing down with there bloated software. I've done loads of my family and friends N95's and other Nokia's to give them the phone they actually paid for!

hmm.. I've just been to nokia's update page and although my phone is v12.0.013 it has told me I can have Version 11.0.026 (which I think is N95 8gb version).. is this correct?
my phone is o2 branded.. don't want to upgrade if it's wrong
    cheers

I'm in exactly the same situation, only got it today. Anyone know?

Might be worth changing the product code of the phone using NSS.

For N95 (version 1 - non 8gb version) use NSS and change the product code to 0536062 this will make the Nokia updater think your phone is a generic/sim-free N95 and should be able to update to the latest v20 firmware. There is a tutorial posted on the forum but if any of you guys need help then drop me a line. make sure you back up everything first though as it will wipe your phone.

I've debranded plenty of N95 and other Nokia's for friends and family by changing the product code. Check out Rap's post here and have a look for yourself:

    http://www.digital-forums.com/showthread.php?t=298575

I guess with anything in life there is a small element of risk but I think you will be fine, just follow the instructions and make sure you put in the correct product code !

Once NSS is installed it literally takes a second to write the new product code and then you're away. Just run the Nokia updater and that's it.

EDIT: Just to confirm though your phone is the standard N95 yeah ? and not the black N95 8gb version.

I'll have a look at that when I get home, cheers mate. What's the advantage in doing so (in simple terms!), the ability to update to faster, potentially less bloated firmware versions or anything else?

It gets rid of network branding so no O2 logos on start up or turning off. It should also be quicker and hopefully more stable as well. Not sure if O2 turn any of the features off. I know that Orange have disabled the N95's internet calls ability so flashing it with generic firmware will restore all the things the networks disabled

it is pretty much fool proof to do. Just make sure you install all the phone drivers etc first before using NSS. Cannot remember if windows installs it automically if not then just download and install the Nokia data suite program from the Nokia website and that will install all the necessory drivers etc for you.

Any more help then give me a shout.

Do you get Settings Wizard preconfigured with UK carriers, specifically Three, so I don't have to manually set stuff up? Will a backup of all data, like address book, texts etc, restore OK once the new firmware is on? I remember getting my N80 updated and every time it booted up it found potentially untrusted software on my memory card which was always a pain. Should I uninstall any apps that are on the memory card prior to doing this?
