I have found the D40 very easy to use ,and use it mainly for portraits ,tried a few times to take it out and get into landscapes etc ,but i have a bit of work to do in that department .I would however if you are going to go nikon get the D40X as it takes most of the lens ,whereas the D40 only accomidates AF-S for the internal focus .
Also the stock lens is an all round goodish lens .
already given you my angle in the other thread mate. The D40 is the smaller brother of the D40X, which of course i didn't choose.
If you were going to go sub 10mpix on a shoestring budget, id probably go for the canon 350d over the d40 9both in the same price range i think), but for little more you can have that 10mpix A100.
