German boss fires staff for not smoking

BERLIN (Reuters) - The owner of a small German computer company has fired three non-smoking workers because they were threatening to disturb the peace after they requested a smoke-free environment.

The manager of the 10-person IT company in Buesum, named Thomas J., told the Hamburger Morgenpost newspaper he had fired the trio because their non-smoking was causing disruptions.

Germany introduced non-smoking rules in pubs and restaurants on January 1, but Germans working in small offices are still allowed to smoke.

"I can't be bothered with trouble-makers," Thomas was quoted saying. "We're on the phone all the time and it's just easier to work while smoking. Everyone picks on smokers these days. It's time for revenge. I'm only going to hire smokers from now on."

In the last couple of months I went for a job at an large American IT company in Birmingham. I they told me from the start that they DO NOT employ smokers. I queried, "surely you mean you don't allow smoking while you are at work"... the response "No, we do not employ anyone who smokes... and don't call me Shirley!"

I wasn't bothered because I don't smoke but I was very surprised at the rule!

P.s.
They also don't allow mobile phones on sight at all, and they do random drug testing.

this is just crazy..
we can see the smoking shelter from our office, and see people walking past to it...its amazing some people go for a smoke like 1 or 2 times each hour....at the start and end of lunch too....non smokers just have to grin and bare it stuck in a gay office!

Yeah indeed same as our place. before and at the end of lunch each day, then also 1-2 times an hour while the non smokers sit there doing all the work while the rest are out of the office sparking up and talking a load of shit.

I have a funny feeling that's illegal for them to tell you that. As you aren't allowed to discriminate against employees unless it affects their job, obviously most companies do discriminate but they can't admit to it!

you can imagine giving workers time off from work to quit their habit. i wonder how many would actually turn up for the course and not do a bunk and have a nice lie in bed.

A friend of Thomas J later confirmed the ten employees don't even exist.

I have since talked about this with other people and it is quite well known, so its no secret.

As for the job... I walked out during the intelligence test (cause i have none!)... No seriously it was an 90 min "online" test and after about the seventh heavily Americanised question (things like American presidents trivia, calculations based on feet and inches etc) I decided that combined with the facts I mentioned before that the company was a complete toss hole and I decided not to waste another second of my time!
