Default any broadband where you ACTUALLY get what you pay for?

hey peeps! as the title says, im looking for a provider who delivers what they sell!
currently on Virgin supposed to be 8mb but have never had nore than 2mb and on occasion speeds no faster than 512k!!!!!
tried to cancel as they sold me my broadband on the premis i could get upto 8mb and after complaining they informed me my line cant handle faster then 2mb, they must have known this before i agreed to sign up!
anyway have three months left and wondered where i should go next! but if im paying for 2mb i want 2mb or does that just not happen?!!!

ps.... i sync at 3.5mb......not knowing loads about broadband, but doesnt that mean i should get 3.5mb?

    thanks guys

It's not the company's fault, you will only get that sort of speed if you pretty much live inside the exchange. Any distance and the signal quality degrades, so they will probably be all pretty much the same.

Also I connect at around 3.5Mb, this equates to a max download speed of around 350k per second. There is a little trickery about using megabits and megabytes (which I think every isp does), both can sneakily be abbreviated to Mb, but the difference is about 10x!

However, I'm sure someone who knows a bit more than me will explain the benefits of local loop unbundling and how it may affect you.

    8x actually. 8 bits in a byte.

if u synced at 8 megabits (never gonna happen) the theoretical adslmax top speed is 1024 kilobytes per second.

i sync at around 6.5-7meg if im lucky and can top out at about 700kb/s so there is still some loss... and im relatively close to the exchange.

changing providers may alter your speed, but if its due to your distance from the exchange, then theres not much you can do barring cable or LLU providers.

i dont know of any providers who still do a 2meg service, as when ADSLmax was rolled out, it was designed to replace 2meg connections by providing the maximum possible speed of up to 8meg for the same price as 2... no one gets anywhere near 8meg unless your on the exchanges doorstep though.

check and see what LLU providers are enabled on your exchange at samknows.com maybe you'll get lucky and have Be or something in your area.

i went with Sl y a couple of weeks ago and get 1597 kb/s at all times but i am not to far from the exchange, not bad for a tenner a month. I was with AOhell and sometimes i dropped to dial up speed and that was £30 a month ..

Why does "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean

post your routers stats including line attenuation and noise margin for up and down and i can give you an estimate.....

i currently sync at 18mb+ with BE, downloads max out normally via ethernet cable at 15.5mb

Sweet as . plus if someone refers you you both get discount i believe

The only ISP I know who has provided exactly what they claim to (none of this 'unlimited' lying bollocks) is UKFSN. I am on BT now who throttle speeds at offpeak times but have a fair usage policy at peak times. UKFSN is the best ISP I have ever used.

hey guys thanks for the info!

i know im never going to get anywhere near 8mb, but even getting 100k+!

oh and im 900 meteres from the exchange!!

will take a look at what sam says and see what i can do!!

    thanks again

    crazy

    just got this from sam

ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services

According to BT Wholesale, houses at your postcode should be able to support a 6Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

    Standard ADSL RAG results:
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEZ] You can receive 2Mbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEZ] You can receive 1Mbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEZ] You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEZ] You can receive 256Kbps ADSL

You are approximately 907 metres from the exchange (straight line distance).

with this in mind sub 100k (1mb) speeds is poor, no?

    they rock..

gives us £X and you can have X gigs peak and X gigs off peak at full pelt. thats how all ISP's should be in this day and age, clear fixed amounts and clear pricing.. none of this ambiguious throttling pish.

you are pretty much on target re: what to expect max with your line attentuation the top sync you could expect is around 8mbps download but anything around your current sync rate is going to be what you should get..

You will however get a faster upload

OK Cheers but I will take it with a pinch of salt as a lot of people on here are reporting that they were told 5-6Mb max and are getting 14-16 so I dont think anyone can tell for certain theres too many factors, BT Wholesale told me at the time that I would not get anything over 2.5-3 MB and I was getting a constant 6.7Mb for a long time now so they dont know shit either.

I'm guessing reputable isps underestimate to avoid pissed off customers. I bet you would be whinging a lot more if the numbers were the other way around.
