    Question Night Photography

    Hi all,

I have decided that providing the rain holds off 2nite im gonna go out and make some use of my new camera.

I fancy havin a go at some long exposures etc, but does anyone have any tips for me to bear in mind or any guides to night time or low light photography?

    Any advice at all appreciated.

    Info Re: Night Photography

You must have a tripod m8..if your camera has a noise reduction on then use that

other than that m8 just have a play with the settings..start with maybe a 2 second exposure and keep upping it to as far as your camera will go..I got some of my best ones on a 30 second exposure.

1 last thing if you camera has a timer on it then use that so you dont have any movement at all on the camera.

Look forward to seeing the results

Cheers mate, yeah got tripod sorted. Camera has noise reduction which is apparently quite good.

Ive ordered a remote for it because apparently using the remote i can open the shutter with one press of it and shut it again with another with an exposure time of up to 30 mins but that hasn't come yet so gonna have a go at 30 seconds.

The timer is something someone else mentioned to me actually, i had never thought that touching the button would move the camera and spoil the shot but thanks for the heads up

A few tips from me mate.

Firstly - Prep yourself. Wrap up warm this time of year, take a flask if you are not near home, mobile phone, torch and food..... I have a cheapo head torch i got from our local garage and it work a treat, light and hands free.

Your gear. A sturdy tripod is a must, remote shutter cable and fully charged batteries.

I use the "bulb" setting on my 40D from the full manual settings and a aperture of around F/9 to f/11. Use the remote shutter to fire the camera, walk away, smoke a fag, eat food, drink coffee, return 5 mins later.. Job's a good un. Evaluate each image and adjust exposure time accordingly.
It will all depend on light pollution and what you are shooting. Ideally head out into the arse end of nowhere to get the best shots.
Oh and then post then on here for us to see...

    What Wingnut said.

Just to add, don't be misled into using anything more than ISO 200. 100 and 200 are fine. Open the exposure long enough and you'll get the amount of light you need with practice and less noise due to using a lower ISO value.

Good luck, Have fun, keep warm and safe and post the pics.

Likewise, I'm looking forward to them too

    Cool

I was going to go out too... but the weather wasn't being nice and I don't fancy taking my camera out in the rain .

Got three days off so I'm hoping for a dry night myself. Place called Pex Hill in Cronton has an Observatory and a view overlooking Liverpool and Runcorn.. lights should look pretty cool... that is if there are no bleedin' Doggers all over the place.. lol

Let me know if you're gonna go into the hills. If you know of some cracking views that I don't then I need to find out about them .

I'm hoping to get a good night shot of Rock Savage at some point too.

Did you see my pic of the Runcorn bridge? Won Octobers photo comp with it. .
