Also i shoudl say, when you open things up, they close soon after.

Liek anything from the My Computer (say Wireless settings) it will open then close.

The Windows Task Manager will open then minimise (as you can see the green bar near the clock) but double clicking on this does not restore, niether does ctrl alt del again.

I had an Asus laptop until last Summer and I love them, they were a bit slow with drivers though, not on their site?

I'm sure you've been to their support site
    http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

but I got some from here at one point

No restore as this is as it was out of the box.

    He Did try a repair.

Asus site (i must be getting it wrong) does not have a seach criteria and when i go through the model type etc it seems too generic and the drivers are not labeled as i woudl suspect let alone finding the spcific one.

I'll just keep on searching thorugh and trying to replicate the google search i did prevously.

try doing a clean install of XP to fix the menu probs, if its only a few days old then he wont have any or much important stuff on there yet. so it will be easy to make a backup of his files.

as for drivers, they should be on the ASUS website, failing that call them up and explain you only have Vista drivers with the machine and ask if they can give you a link to the drivers on their site or if they can send out the appropriate drvier CD.

select notebook/X51 series the next dropdown has the specific models

The fresh install is the best idea for the menu fix. Is the problem that you don't have the Asus system disk or that it's Vista and you (understandably!) don't want it?

    EDIT
There's a search box top left of the page I directed you to

    Thanks for the search advice.

It is an XP Pro with XP Disk, but the driver disk was for vista (when you insert it).

A clean install of XP is an option, be nice to bypass that though, but if not possible then easily enough to do.

    Cheers....Q

Thanks for the search help, got to the product stright away, i was going down a different route searching graphics.

A majority are coming down and then when unzipping are not complete and corupt. So going through the process again on the ones proving to be so.

I mentioned the try again for a XP repair/reinstall but as it is a brand new machine he wants to try and deal with this thorugh the warrenty first instead. I am thinking when he does make the calls they may try and get him to action this himself in the first instance again anyway.

    Cheers.....Q

They might but they also might have some reg tricks etc to fix the problem, at least you can get a disk of software/drivers sent out. They are great laptops, mine gave me 3 years of daily service and is now doing the same for a friend. I never had cause to use their tech support, just the support pages.
