Peter Hain resigned as Work and Pensions Secretary today after it was announced he would face a police investigation into his failure to declare £103,000 in campaign donations.
The Cabinet Minister announced he would take the move "to clear my name" after the Electoral Commission, which had been investigating whether he broke Commons law, said it would refer the matter to police.
The Metropolitan Police will now decide whether to investigate if Mr Hain broke electoral law.
