    Default Tiscali, P2P, DNS, Static IP's... :(

I've just moved house and had to, (long story) sign up with Tiscali, (1 meg dl + free router- needed for another pc.)

I'm getting the full 1 meg dl speed with all direct downloads, but when using torrents, the speeds are absolutely terrible, Tiscali must be throttling the P2P software. Any ways to work around this? I'm using UTorrent, that tries to mask itself as P2P software from the isp, (I believe I'm right here?) but to no avail it seems.

Also- I've never used a router before, always just had my own modem in the past. (Not likking this router business at all so far! ) I haven't quite worked out how to create a static IP addy for myself and add my torrent client, soulseek etc to the routers settings so as to be able to use them to their full (!?) extent.
I'm still using Vista(Boooo!) for the time being and while trying to sort out setting up the static address, it seems I also need to enter DNS settings- which I have no clue about what I need to do.

Sorry, (as usual) for the rambling questions, any help with any/all of them most apreciated.

If you open a CMD prompt and type in ipconfig \all it should give you your DNS address.

I'm with Tiscali and use Utorrent and my downloads fly down without me having to do anything with my firewalls etc and thats on both PC's at home. I do use their IPTV though so apparently you are on a different part of the network?

Tiscali throttle between 6 and 11, so you wont get any speeds then. Also, the modem I got with them was really, really shite, and when I plugged in my netgear my speeds jumped up tremendously.

When I had to move back to my parents last year for a month I was stuck with tiscali. The line was slow and P2P was throttled as well as newsgroups.

It was taking me 6 hours to download a 700 meg file. I tried everything but nothing worked. The parents even got an e-mail from tiscali informing them they was breaking their fair usage policy.

I would try and ditch tiscali if you can. One of the worst ISP's I have ever used.

tiscali are a fucking joke of an isp and no mistake... they throttle left right and centre, and even fucked up the throttling so much they blocked itunes.

I have to stick up for Tiscali to some extent. When I first started on their service it was pretty bad, but I complained that I couldn't connect my PS2 during peak hours, so they swapped me onto something else and since then the service has been fantastic. Yes its throttled, but strikes me the majority are these days, and those that aren't may well be quite soon. If you restrict your downloading to offpeak then you can grab a 700mb file in about 20 minutes - well I can. I get up in the morning, set my torrents to grab the tv shows that appeared over night, go off for my shower, and its downloaded by the time I get back. Its not difficult.
