Hackers run retail PS3 games on HDD

Yup, you heard it right: hackers have discovered a way to run retail PS3 games off the PS3's internal HDD and off external USB HDDs. While this is quite a neat trick, it might not be all that useful considering how much data is stored on a single layered Blu-ray disc -- about 25 gigabytes. That precious HDD space will probably end up being devoured in no time.
More tech-savvy gamers out there who want to know more about this development can go check out the tech mumbo-jumbo here. We're pretty sure this high-level jargon will scare away most. What countermeasures can Sony take to ensure this doesn't become an even larger problem? Rampant piracy has always cast its dark shadow over the PSP ... will the PS3 be next? Let's hope not.

Its good that someones got it working though. Will be a big download but at least you won't need to burn it to an expensive disk, just bang it on a 500gig HDD, you'll fit a fair few games on there at once.

It'll be interesting what ISP's say about you downloading a few games a month though. Suppose its no different to downloading 3 HD films a week using XBOX Live or itunes etc.

looking at the most of the releases they are no where near the capacity of a blueray disc, in fact most will fit on a dvd9

yeah most 3rd party ones are much smaller - unreal is under 5 gig.
no - theres not many games - but i settle to be able to d/l one and play it off my hd at moment !

I think devs are getting lazy, I was playing on Banjoe Kazooie - a huge, gorgeous game, all crammed into a 128 megabit cartridge

Someone would have to develop a kit to enable full size drives to work mate. Currently 300gb is the biggest Laptop size you can get. However there is no reason why you can't have multiple drives and swap them when needed

apparently this hack (if its legit) works with external HD's aswell so the skys the limit.
