Police in Italy have arrested the head of one of the country's most notorious mafia organisations.
Pasquale Condello, who had been on the run for 20 years, was arrested in an apartment in Reggio Calabria.
The 57-year-old is said to be the boss of the 'Ndrangheta - the Calabrian equivalent of the Sicilian Mafia.
The ruthless crime syndicate hit the headlines in August when its gunmen shot six people dead outside a restaurant in the German city of Duisburg.
Italian interior minister Giuliano Amato said of Condello's arrest: "It is the latest, extraordinary operation against organised crime.
"Pasquale Condello was the number one boss of the 'Ndrangheta."
Condello, who was known as "the supreme one", had been number two on the police list of Italy's most dangerous fugitives.
Anti-mafia prosecutor Alberto Cisterna said the Condello clan was one of the most "ferocious" 'Ndrangheta families.
Condello has received several life prison terms for a series of crimes, including the 1987 killing of a former head of the Italian state railways.
The 'Ndrangheta is thought to have eclipsed the Sicilian Mafia in power and reach, especially in running coca1ne trafficking between Colombia and Europe.
While the Calabrian organisation has increased its power, the Sicilian mob has suffered a series of blows with the arrest of several top bosses in recent years, sometimes with the aid of information from turncoats.
But few turncoats have emerged in the 'Ndrangheta, mainly because of family ties.
