Photo Competition - March

This month's competition theme is "Waterways", as chosen by peterc4.

Closing date will be the 24th.

Please read the rules below before posting your entry.

Rules:

• Must be your own work.

• Only 1 entry each.

• Entries can be changed once during the competition if you feel you've taken a better shot, but please make a separate post with the new entry and edit out your old image from your previous post, to keep things in the correct chronological order.

• Max file size 800x600 250KB. (There's info on optimising your image size in the sticky of the same name)

• Pictures to be embedded into your post in this thread rather than attached. (Use a free image host that allows hot linking such as imageshack or photobucket and encase the direct link in [IMG][/IMG] tags. There's a quick guide on how to do it here)

• Entries should to be taken for the competition rather than entering a previously shot image.

• Photoshop (or other imaging software) use is allowed, to enhance your image, but please remember this competition is about producing the best photo not the best piece of artwork.

Good call Neo, personally feel that with the title waterways then it should be man-made canals viaducts locks etc. Rather than stream and rivers with waterfalls. But on the flip side the Thames is a river but also a waterway for water craft...

Cool... Waterway to me suggests a man made structure. Maybe I've just led a sheltered life...

Waterways sounds to me like Neo said - Man made etc but I recon you could class a river in it that has boats on it as well. I've got an idea of a good shot but will need some nice sunny weather. Good theme though

Wikiboolocks definition:

A waterway is any navigable body of water. These include rivers, lakes, oceans, and canals. In order for a waterway to be navigable, it must meet several criteria:

• The waterway must be deep enough to allow the draft depth of the vessels using it;
• The waterway must be wide enough to allow passage for the beam width of the vessels using it;
• The waterway must be free of barriers to navigation such as waterfalls and rapids, or have a way around them (such as canal locks);
• The current of the waterway must be mild enough to allow vessels to make headway.

Vessels using waterways vary from small animal-drawn barges to immense ocean tankers and ocean liners, such as cruise ships.

Only argument I have with the definition is with regards to rapids or waterfalls, is they can be navigated by Kayaks/Canoes then I would of thought that would be acceptable.
Anyhooo, I've no excuse being surrounded by various canals, navigable rivers and the tea brown coloured Irish Sea to choose from. Just need to get some ideas together. Hmmmmmmm

I think we should go with the wikipoo definition of a waterway, that way we have clear outlines as to what we can and can't enter as a shot.

You would not catch me going over a waterfall in a canoe!!
