    Serious The shares discussion thread

Anyone else on here dabble in the stock exchange?

I get the occasional tip, and have found it quite interesting. Generally I only hold in AIM listed UK companies, but might consider some foreign exchange listed shares as I learn more about the markets.

I have just switched from a broker to TDW's online service, which gives me T+20 settlement (where you pay for the shares 20 days after the transaction).

Personally, I find it beats the hell out of saving, or ISA's - but obviously the risk is substantially higher (but they are not so high if you research).

Well due to who I work for I have to have my account with them which has pro's and cons and Im restricted on what I can trade in. But do a bit of everything, even fx as I get spot prices on currency.

Fx has always interested me - I guess the returns are probably slower than share trading - but more stable.

    Currently I have:
Nighthawk Energy (HAWK). Brought about 10k 9 months ago, and they are now starting to pay off. They are a gas producer, and have some excellent warrants. I still feel they are undervalued, and could be a good choice if anyone wants a flutter for a mid term investment. Most broker forecasts place the valuation at around 150p as they are on the brink of production. They are also drilling for Oil I believe.

Also got some shares in Churchill Mining (CHL), these I have been watching for a while and they fluctuate between 45-65p so when they hit the 45 mark I brought in around 12k about 3 weeks ago - today they hit 61p and there is impending news on some coal production - so that could be at 70p by they end of the week.

Also have some shares in Standard Life (SL.) I got free when they demutualised. They hit 340 last year, but with the credit crunch have dropped to around 210. Not to bothered about these as they were freebies, but if they hit 200 again ill probably buy some more as at that price they will be undervalued - and should hit 230 in a short space of time. Also, being listed on the FTSE they pay a dividend .

One worth watching is Northern Petrolium (NOP), originally held these at about 40 - then went up to 200 (sadly I sold well before then). They are sat at around 142 at the moment and are undervalued. With any luck one of the big oil companies will buy it after I buy back in and there is a potential to make a killing there.

Silver is becoming scarce and is used in everything - the price is booming but is still cheap enough to buy at the minute!

Platinum and paladium have skyrocketed due to being used as catalysts. My tip would be Goldman Sachs, record breaking year last year and looking good this year but because of all the credit nonsense they've dipped to below $170 - should def be above $200 probably nearer $230 by year end.

Best part with fx is it's cheaper than buying foreign currency for holidays
