Thought I'd have a go at the HDR malarky. Think it looks ok. Bit disappointed there's a slight lens flare thing in the middle. Is that because I need a better lens?

Its a cracking first effort m8.
Points from me:
Straighten horizon let me know if you dont know how to do it
I would have cropped the dark patch off the bottom of the page
I think the lense flare aint that bad really and adds to it
This is just my opinion though
I think its a great shot mate. Only criticism would be.....
Your using a 400D, im assuming with a kit lens, so theres no problem with the lens mate.
The lower part of the shot seems slightly out of focus, personally i would have changed the focus point to the lower of the nine. But like i said the shot is great.

Looks great to me too mate, I have only seen a few HDR shots now, the one I saw yesturday looked like a sketch somehow.
Anyway I like, the horizon seems straight to me, just the dark at the bottom is a little distracting.
not a fan of hdr , but that is a nice pic not over the top, like karlos says crop that dark bit of the bottom left corner, great first attempt....

I like it, not over the top like some HDR shots you see. I'm not sure if the horizon is straight or not now lol It looked straight at first but not I can't tell??
i like it m8 nicely done
Your nine AF points on your camera mate.
You can select one of the nine to focus on or you can focus on them all.
Check the manual for AF selection point.

Nice subtle effects for a HDR shot there, I like it.
Regarding the 'lower of the nine' comment, I think it refers to the focus points you see through the viewfinder when you half press the shutter. Lower, being the foreground in your shot. You can manually select which area you want the lenses focal point to be, and with a small aperture, it should keep most of the background in focus too.
Regarding the 50mm its apparantly excellent for landscapes, i havent had the chance to get out with mine, cant wait to try it.

That's a really nice shot and great for a first HDR effort .
I'm very new to the HDR stuff as well but when you get a result that you like and also that others like it's a rewarding result I did a couple that I'd taken to extremes and got some nice comments on them then recently, I did a HDR of Tower bridge which is mostly a boosting of colours (as well as a B/W conversion).
Great shot mate. DO MORE !!!!

HDR only suits certain images, and this is one of them
Follow the advice above and you'll see it improve.
Its a great 1st effort m8.
Bilbo.
I think its fine, the horizon is straight enough and theres no problems with focusing, small aperture and focus to infinity and you cant go wrong with landscapes.
The lens flare could well be down to the lens, although any lens would struggle with a scene like this, the kit lens isnt brilliant with the 400D. You may have been able to reduce it with a longer hood or stopping the sun hitting the camera with your hand, making sure its not within the frame ofcourse.
To me it doesnt look straight
Ok to try this and straighten it in PS
select the measure tool (located within the eyedropper icon..right clkick)
click once on the left hand side of the horizon and then holding the mosue button drag it to the right hand side
then click on IMAGE-ROTATE CANVAS-ARBITARY
this will bring a prompt box just click OK you may need to crop the image to suit
Hope this helps m8..its the first thing i do when editing any shots I take
love it m8
