Firmware 2.17 is now available for download

What is this? A new PS3 firmware update? What could be in it? And why such a random number? Mysteries abound in this random late night update. Stay tuned as we download the update and explore the new features of the firmware.

[Update: Doesn't appear Sony included notes with this firmware update. Most likely a few bug fixes have been included. If we find out more, you can be sure that we'll update.]

If you’ve signed in to the PLAYSTATION Network tonight on your PS3, you probably noticed that you were prompted to upgrade the system’s firmware to v2.17. In case you were wondering what it’s all about (and a quick Google search indicates that yes, you are) the operating stability of some online PS3 titles has been improved.

Most likely. Not long now since I believe the date for the proposed revamp was April 15th.

If things liek this are going to be sotrable it might be worth me getting and sorting a larger HD sooner rather than later.

With regards to running PS2 games, I just had a look around and nowhere has a definitive guide to this... just loads of sketchy comments.

Right after this update my PS3 freaked out, connection wise, the screen kept blinking on and off, sound was normal, I had to flick the switch at the back to turn it off!

It seems ok now, but I was not amused... it's never done anything like that before...

This just says that ff11 and some old ps2 games use the hdd now that thats about it mate.. thanks for the info anyway

Im 99% sure this is another fake. Just like Paradox, Ferrox, Ottaman and Black Dragon before it.

this is first I heard of I.load ... just googled and it's seeminlgy the same boat as before... 75% skeptic 25% hoping...

I did notice on the Sony site however when I grabbed the firmware they advise against the use of "non legit" firmwares that are available... I haven't heard of any patched firmwares for the ps3 apart from 1.1 ... and no one runs that anymore, or the firmware bypass, but I was under the impression you can't play the latest games without the latest firmwares, like the psp...
