Lovell Telescope @ Jodrell Bank

Mornin' all.

I spent the day around Cheshire with some friends yesterday, we started off at Jodrell Bank which i'd not been to in about 25 years, was still amazed by the sheer size of the huge radio telescope there.

Here's a shot I took from the entrance gate, with a Hoya R72 infrared filter on the camera

Next one from the viewing platform right next to the telescope, hard to get a sense of scale but it was frikin huge!!

i remember going past jodrell bank on the train when i was a kid but not really been near it since it brings back memories

Yeah i'd not been there since i was about 5 years old or so, still pretty impressive the scale of the thing though. Although as a kid i remember the visitor center having much more in there than it does now.

It's a shame there are plans in the pipeline to close Jodrell Bank.

Thanks all, wish i'd had taken another lens with me as there was a crackin' shot (which i'm sure i got on the G9, will check in a bit) of the telescope from the gardens which i think would have been nice, but after importing it the scope looked tiny on the 10-20mm.

@wizard, didn't know they were planning to close, the impression I got was far from that as the lady there was saying they were extending the exhibit area this year?

I've just checked and it looks like they may lose funding for one of the telescopes, in fact the very telescope you photographed

It would be such a shame if they lost it, it's been there since the 50's now and still in use today, i've no idea how many other radio telescopes of that size are in the UK but can't be that many.

But I suppose MP's do need a pay rise for the worthy job they do so guess something has to go!!

I'm loving those shots, not been for years! The 2nd one is my fav though.

I remember going there when I was a kid and sitting on a chair spinning a mag styleee BMX wheel for some reason lol

Its a great place to tour, despite it's lack of real tours per se and its all very Space Odyssey 2001.

It would be such a shame if they lost it, it's been there since the 50's now and still in use today, i've no idea how many other radio telescopes of that size are in the UK but can't be that many.

there's a place down cornwall called goon hilly ( think thats how it's spelt ) with very large radio telescopes i went there in 1999 but i got the feeling the "tour" was just one big advert for british telecom
i only had a 1.3mp camera at the time so the photo's i got wern't great

AH i'll have to check that out Cosmica, would love to get some star trail shots near Jodrell Bank but fear there's just too many towns around so id' get a lot of light pollution, whereas cornwall might make an ideal location for one.
