Just to add a little choice to your training mate, I had totally forgotten about the Straight Blast Gym which is based in Manchester. They have a very good reputation and also have some pro fighters on their books.
Their website is here if you want a butchers.

Hey rikman. I don't know enough about the fitness side to give any more concrete advice, try abcbodybuilding.com and muscletalk.co.uk. Fartlek does improve fitness and weight loss but I don't know the ins and outs and won't pretend to, you need the best quality information.
One meal a day is a joke right? The 3 crucial parts to weight training are sleep, the training itself and diet. Don't compromise on any. If you don't eat small meals regularly your body can go into starvation mode and save food it should be using. Make sure you take a multivit everyday and I wouldn't bother with any other supplements apart from protein shakes for now. You could use something like creatine to increase muscle mass but your first months gains will be big anyway (and I've heard varying opinions on how good your muscle actually is using creatine).
Eat slow release carbs on the day of training and before (generally anything wholewheat such as wholewheat pasta) to give your body the fuel it needs. Among other times, you must have a protein shake during or after your workout and also eat some protein within a few hours after your workout (ideally fish or white meat). My personal trainer used to advocate a boost or mars bar before training as it gave him a small sugar boost both physically and psychologicaly and was the only time he had a sweet. Good luck again!
The 1 meal a day isn`t a joke mate no hehe, its what I have done so far to generally lose weight. As I say I havent "started" any programme as such yet apart from cutting what I eat and generally working out as I don`t know enough yet to get specific with foods and supplements etc.
Sounds like good advice there - and thanks for those site links, deffo looks liek some good reading.
When you say fish, would cod or tuna be OK as thats the only fish I like?
...and white meat I guess chicken / turkey?
Gonna have an hour in Tesco later I think checkingout all the different foods and stuff.
I am going down to SBG tonight to speak to the guys there, and get tell them my situation, goals etc, and will post back with more info on what they say as when I get back
Hi fellas.
Went down to SBG last night and spent a couple of hours there watching and had a chat with Karl the main guy there. All seems very friendly and the other students there were willing to chat about the place and are generaly nice guys.
After the chat with Karl I`ve been booked in for a 1hr private lesson on Monday so he can put me through my paces, see where I`m at, what I`m good at, not good at etc and he`s then gonna advice me on classes and stuff from there.
I`ll keep you all posted
