Help playing videos offline?

Hi,
I've spent hours reading threads here and elsewhere but i'm still unsure.
Basically, i was banned in december so never got to update to the december update.
I used to be able to play h.264 MP4 files fine and now whenever i try it says i need to access live for a media update.
so...
my options are;
1) find a way to transcode h.264 files to a different container that will play offline? - is this possible?
2) convert the files to wmv vc1 (i really dont want to mess around with lots of programs so if any one has a clue to a simple single program that is fast that would be great)
3) find a way to enable mp4 files to play offline?
4) buy a new 360 and sell this one. i really dont want to spend extra cash on microsh#te and i really dont want to have two xboxs in my lounge just so i can have one to play games i download and one to play videos.

If anybody has any ideas as to how i can solve any of the above or has any other ideas please help. thanks!

sell banned 360 to someone who doesnt have a need for live, buy another .. cost you about £40 , bout price of a game.. well i did it for that..

i downloaded that update, burnt it to disc as the zip and also tried unzipped, and also as a windows live disc and as a mastered (closed session) and no joy. i think it wont work because its for the US.
Looks like ill be getting a new box then.
Any ideas of how much i'd get for it on ebay? and what i should put the title for the auction as if modded? also wheres the cheapest place for a connectivity kit? if im gonna mod the next one, i want to do it properly.

You can stream videos to your 360 using tversity theres a tutorial on there and it will convert videos on the fly to the 360. It also streams to many other upnp devices and doesn't require media centre. If you do have media centre try using transcode 360. They all worked fine for me when playing divx via the 360. Enjoy.

yeah i really hate streaming. plus im using 720p files so they dont work as well on wifi (i cant hard route) cheers anyway though
