music Slash on Appetite for Destruction

    by Kev Geoghegan
    Radio 1 music reporter

Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash has been telling Newsbeat about his memories of recording Appetite For Destruction, which is being featured in Zane Lowe's Masterpieces.

    Slash Interview

It's been over 20 years since the five-piece exploded onto the music scene with their debut album.

It featured classic tracks like Paradise City, Welcome To The Jungle and one of their biggest hits, Sweet Child O' Mine.

Slash is still surprised that the album is regarded as a classic.

He said: "Who would have thought? I remember thinking, 'Maybe the record isn't that great'.

"When I was a kid, there were certain records that anybody who was anybody, who was cool, had in their collection.

"And we actually made one of those records, I'm very proud of that."

    Jack Daniel's and coffee

With many of the bandmembers struggling wtih drink and drug addictions during the recording sessions, it's slightly surprising that Slash remembers the band being quite professional.

He said: "The actual recording was pretty calm, I mean there was some partying but we were pretty focused.

"Like for me, it was Jack Daniel's and coffee in the morning and work from noon till 10 at night.

"Then I'd go out and get crazy and then wake up in the morning, wherever I was, and try and work out how to get a ride back to the studio."

You can hear the entire Appetite For Destruction album on Zane Lowe's show on 3 April from 7pm

"Where you are is what you eat. When I'm in London I'll have beans on toast for lunch. On holiday what? Tapas? Go on then I'll have a bit. You eat whatevers in that area"

It's a good album, but I still prefer Use your Illusion 1&2

I loved GNR when Appetite came out and I still love them today. They were a great band I just wish Axle would sort him self out and get out a new album and see he's still got it.

I saw GnR in 88/89 at the Monsters of Rock festival at Donnington Park back when Appetite For Destruction was first released and they were still a relatively unknown band. They were second on the bill out of about 8 bands and absolutely took the roof of the place.(open air gig) The footage from that gig is used on a few of GnRs videos .

Saw them again on the Use Your Illusion tour at Wembley Stadium in the early 90's in front of a full capacity crowd. Live and let die kicked ass.

Maybe they'll reform one day..(wishful thinkin)

That will be the gig i went to, they were real late on stage as usual but the girlies flashing their boobs for the camera men entertained is for a while. Once the intro to Welcome to the jungle kicked in and they came on it was amazing!!!!
