Default going mac on the cheap?

    is it possible??

my pc is slowly getting worse and needs upgrading, or i could just spend the money getting a mac, i have looked at them and like the feel of the mac os.

i was thinking of getting a cheap mac mini secondhand to see if i really like it - i can pick one up for between £150-200.
would this be a good idea?

i dont need it for games but i do use my computer for downloading DVD's and manipulating photo's taken with my scuba digital camera.
so quick processor, dvd writer, lots of memory and decent sized HDD would be needed (i could always use the HDD's i have)

Grab yourself a first/second edition iMac G5 (the white ones) on Fleabay. I got a 17" model with DVD writer for less than 300 notes and there are cheaper ones around.

If that seems like a little too much, eMacs can be had for under 100 to see if you like them.

You won't regret it one bit.

i saw a few really cheap emacs on fleabay, one went for £62 just up the road from me - are they any good?

would one of those be ok for learning the ropes on?

eMac is only going to have a G4 processor, too slow for latest apps imo.

Idealy you want something with an intel processor. Secondhand intel Mac mini would be the cheapest but not sure how much they go for.

Intel processor mac will have the bare minimum of tiger running on it, Intel chipsets will run the old mac apps and new mac apps to.

You can either buy a brand new Apple tv(under 300 quid!), hack and put a full version of tiger/leopard on it
    or buy a mac mini

OR go to the apple store and spend a day in there playing on the various macs etc..trust me its worth the switch

Get a mini at least, it'll piss all over a G5 for performance, get the best you can, the slowest current model is about £400, Do it by telephone to the Mac store and whinge about the price, they love a deal, do it last thing before they are due to finish for the night and you'll get the best discount.
    If at first you don't succeed.....redefine success. . . .

Get a cheap dual-core laptop (for example) and put OSX 10.5 on it
    http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

I've done it my Dell XPS laptop.

Think outside of the (little white) box! ;-p

Does this work straight away with the osx updates or do you have to wait for the patched updates?
