    You running windows XP?

    and you only need type:

    cd windows
    -RETURN-
    cd system32
    -RETURN-
    cd drivers
    -RETURN-
    cd etc
    -RETURN-

Doesnt work mate, yes I am using XP. If I type in cd windows I just get "the system cannot find the path specified". I am on a network, does this make any difference?

Make sure you are in the C drive first

    Type:

    c:

This will change you to the C drive

    Then type

cd \ (Backslash incase it doesn't show)

This will take you to the route of the C drive
Then change to the c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc folder as per above instructions.

Is your version of windows on the c drive though? Is it on another drive or partition not called c:

cheers mate, bit more successful this time. After entering windows, drivers etc. I got the below (I have included everything I entered, look right at the bottom-doesnt look right to me?

    Code:
    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:Documents and SettingsJoe Hargreaves>c:

    C:Documents and SettingsJoe Hargreaves>cd
    C:Documents and SettingsJoe Hargreaves

    C:Documents and SettingsJoe Hargreaves>cd

    C:>cd windows

    C:WINDOWS>cd system32

    C:WINDOWSsystem32>cd drivers

    C:WINDOWSsystem32drivers>cd etc

    C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetc>dir hosts*.*
Volume in drive C has no label.
     Volume Serial Number is 78FF-635F

     Directory of C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetc

    16/04/2008 13:13 740 hosts
                   1 File(s) 740 bytes
                   0 Dir(s) 148,848,672,768 bytes free

im betting its a simple case of having file extensions disabled, so idiot boy thinks hes ranaming the file to just hosts, but in reality windows is hiding the .txt extension.

i wish ms wouldnt do that by deafult.. makes explaining things to noobs incredibly difficult.

tools>folder options>"view" tab>untick "hide file extensions for known file types"

then rename the file to "hosts"

if you have done it all correctly (i dont hold out much hope tbh), the file icon should not be a notepad icon, it should be an unknown file type icon.

Exactly why I was getting him to do it from the command prompt, as it would show all hosts files, but by the looks he only had a hosts and not hosts.txt

m8, knowing you, could be literally hundreds of things.

it should work if you have done exactly what you have pasted... theres nothing more to it.

only thing i can think of is if perhaps blocking the IP instead of the URL. or make sure the url isnt just reddirecting or something.. not certain how that kind of shit works with regards to host files.

would it not be easier just blocking it on the router?
