    Question Fuse Box, How much?

In our house we have two fuse boxes, one either side of the meter. One is for the main house and another for the extension we have. However, one is an old metal thing with ceramic type fuses and the other is plastic with plastic fuses. I'd like to change the units to one new one with rcd's.
Anybody know what sort of price a sparky will charge to do this? (Newcastle area)
Obviously has to be part p registered (I think).

I got charged £210 recently for replacement fusebox, fuses, wiring tests etc.
Took the guy 1.5 days to do it, and the council came around after and inspected.
Paper work etc was provided by the sparks.
I know you can get the fuse box and fuses yourself for around £60 from Screwfix.

When we had our heating installed by british gas (yeah I know, fleecing bastards) I asked how much they charged, and got £600.
I thought half that would be normal, but its cheaper than I thought.

    Cheers for the info...

Make sure with a RCD one that the lights and the power are separated ie when the power trips that it don't also trip the lights off cos otherwise you find yourself in the dark !
    good point!

Info Re: Fuse Box, How much?

    http://www.whatprice.co.uk/prices/el...t-install.html

You will also have to factor in the cost to do an inspection report on the installation. Isn't just as simple as "replace old fuses with new rcd's". If you have any earth leakage the RCD's will obviously trip out , but they wont with the old non-RCD fuses currently installed.

"Big can of worms" springs to mind if you dont have a full periodic inspection report.

Im a Sparky in Newcastle if you would like me to take a look at it for you. Normal price for a 11way split Cunsumer unit with RCD protection and replacement meter tails is normally around the £250 - £300 mark. Your property will also need to be Part P tested, but this can be factored into the job.
Other things that can change the price is things like.
Are existing cables long enough to be rewired into new consumer unit
If cables need to be replaced are you floors, concrete / chipboard / laminate / tiled etc

Drop me a PM if you want more info

Also if that old fuseboard is one of the ones with ceramic fuse carriers, if you take the fuse out, there will be a little strip of white fabric behind it, this is usually asbestos so just be a lil bit carefull of how you dispose of it ie dont leave it laying round for kids to chew on or owt
