What's the deal?
Carphone Warehouse and o2 stores have recently cut the price of Apple's uber-trendy iPhone to £169 (8GB version, 18-month contract), slashing a full £100 off the original price.
Aware that this move would leave those customers who bought one before the drop feeling a touch disgruntled, both shops have agreed to refund the difference (though one only in vouchers), providing it was bought after March 18, 30 days before the drop.
How to claim.
Both the Carphone Warehouse and o2 are touting this as an automatic cashback offer as part of their price promises, but actually you'll have to cajole them a teeny bit to get it.
From o2 shops:
o2 customers get the better deal; simply go to your local shop, or call its customer services on 0870 241 0202 (or 202 from o2 handsets), and ask for the refund. You should get £100 credited to your account within a few days.
From Carphone Warehouse shops:
If you bought your iPhone contract at the Carphone Warehouse, you'll get the £100 value back in vouchers, redeemable against anything in its store. If there's nowt you want, you could always buy another phone to flog online (see the new eBay Selling article for tips)...
Again, claiming is simply a matter of calling them up, or going in-store and giving them your details.
NB: These offers are only open to those who've activated their iPhone o2 contract. If yours is unlocked, you don't qualify.
Why are they doing this deal?
Because it's likely a newer, faster, even more all-singing-and-dancing version will be out in the next 3 months, and they want to clear the stock in time for it.
What if I got it direct from Apple?
Unfortunately, unlike in other countries where this offer has been run, Apple stores are keeping the iPhone's price at £269, so there's no difference to claim for.
