    Question Online Banking Card Reader

Does anyone know of a bank that is not forcing its customers to adopt the new Card Reader security.

Natwest and Nationwide have recently sent me a card reader each...
This 'handy' calculator sized device is needed for me to do online transfers from my accounts.

This means that now I have to logon to my bank using my username, pin number and password and then if I want to transfer moneys then I have to choose the amount and then autorise it by then finding one of these Card Reader's (luckily either one will work for either account), finding my card, entering my pin number, entering the amount again, and then copying the 8 digit code into my browser.

This all seems like a lot of security considering my paypal account just uses my email and a password and then I can transfer money from my account with that still.
(although I agree this is really shit security)

Rant over, does anyone know what banks are not using these card readers, and are not planning to?

    Thanks

I don't mind having one but I leave my card reader at work pretty much permanently, so if I am trying to log onto my bank account from anywhere else...I can't.

ok I think HSBC might be the safest bet to go for at this stage im not sure why.
We have a pool card reader at work that 3 of us use but its a bit of a pain and seems to get left in random places.
If I get time ill open an account on my lunch one day but if people with any of the accounts suggested who do have card readers could post it might be helpful for others cos I think it might be the case that they are rolling it out gradually for most of the banks so if some people dont have the readers it doesnt mean that they wont do soon.

My main problem is that is just talk a lot longer, still much better than going into the bank tho.

    Thanks to all

Oh and by the way I am with Barclays. I never asked for the reader but I have 5 accounts with them and log on at least 3 times a day, I think this is why they sent me one.

First Direct doesn't use anything like that - no plans to either as far as i'm aware.

Also, they usually have deals for switching your account, the last i saw gave you £200, and £100 if you didn't like them!

They are fully online - have HSBC behind them and are always winning customer service awards.

I was with RBoS before - FD are leagues ahead of them - dont have an old school bank attitude, but are rather "hip" in comparison!

Nothing from Abbey, but no surprise there as they only offer free banking and it is wank in all honesty. Keep meaning to change banks...

While we are at it, anyone particularly happy with their business banking?

It's nice and easy to use but I could do with one for work and one for home...but then that would defeat the object of it. You need it if you are transferring large amounts of money too.

I am more than happy for them to be more security cautious with my money.

Halifax have the nicest login IMHO - Username, password and a nice easy-peasy question e.g. mother's maiden name.

nationwide Barclays and NatWest all have issued card readers.
HSBC are currently trialling card readers.
Halifax and Lloyds TSB will no doubt soon follow suit.
However key-fob card readers will soon be released by a major UK bank aswell.
Head of FD told me she does not want to introduce card readers, but if the other banks wil have to follow suit with 2FA as otherwise the fraud will migrate to their banks.
By the end of 2009 I expect most banks to be using 2FA technology to secure online payments.
Dont forget all these card readers are interoperable and therefore you can use a Natwest card reader on Barclays online banking.

    Cheers

    From the Nationwide site:

Does my Card Reader hold personal information?

No. Your Card Reader doesn't any personal information so no one will be able to access your accounts if your Card Reader is lost or stolen.

If your Card Reader is ever lost or stolen you don't need to tell us. You can use any Nationwide Card Reader, or one from any other UK Bank or Building Society. If you need a replacement you can order one online using our Internet Banking service.
So basically if you have two you can keep one at home and one at work. My problem is I never use my Nationwide card so never carry the card with me (guess I will now)

Barclays here, I know they were talking about this last year But I had no idea they were bringing it in now. As long as it works on Windows AND Mac I won't mind, with Barclays though.....!
I'm an ex Woolwich customer and they were brilliant compared to Barclays, shite!
