Default Tefal Kettle - the only useful new kitchen gadget

We all have them - that cupboard full of must-have kitchen gadgets that you use once then realise the hassle of cleaning them makes them useless. Toastie machines and food processors being the main culprits. Even coffee machines in some houses get relegated to the cupboard of useless junk.

Some have lasted the test of time, like toasters and kettles. Finally, after wasting hundreds of pounds between myself and my family, we have bought a kitchen gadget that i'm actually impressed with. Mum just turned up with it from costco, it was about £40 iirc.

    Presenting... the tefal machine:

The tank on the back holds a few litres of cold water. The only hassle this machine causes is having to fill it up every now and again. You put your mug under the front and press the red button and instant boiling water comes out, at any time of day or night, with no waiting around for the kettle to boil.

It cuts down on your electricity too because it only boils what you actually take into the mug and not the whole thing.

I reckon i drink about twice as much tea since we got it just because its so incredibly easy to make it now.

Has anybody else found any new household gadgets that are actually good in the long term? ie. post blender/toastie machine

Water should be fresh and for tea (assuming not tea bags, I don't use 'em) properly boiling. This kettle is a crap idea and hardly new, filter machines and percolators have worked this way for years. The water barely reachers the boil and after the first use he remainder becomes stale. Water loses oxygen as it sits and this taints the flavour. Coffee however should not be overheated or kept hot.

Edit: I've just read the reviews, seems I'm right!

The relevant word is "boiling" people in the reviews are talking about 75-80 degrees, not exactly boiling. The reason for heating the pot when making tea properly is to keep the temperature of the water as high as possible. Brewing or steeping is a reaction requiring high temperature.

lol i know that and i do notice how bad coffee is when you dump boiling water straight onto it, but with tea i cant tell the difference. so thats fine by me. i'm not arsed about tea at all in fact, anything from 0-4 sugars, no milk to pretty much all milk, and any random tea bag and i'm sorted.

we use at least a pot of water a day so it doesnt go that stale which is nice. we have what is basically bottled water coming out of the taps here cos of all the mountains etc. so the filter doesnt really do much (or so it claims)

i prefer my tea quite cool too so thats maybe another reason why i like it. and i am yet to see a kettle with a "nearly boiling" setting for making instant coffee too.

so the verdict is that its not for people who like decent tea then...

its the first of its kind, i assume 2.0 will resolve those issues

i've since seen what might be a better idea at a friends house. its an ordinary kettle with two compartments. you fill the top half with water then you press a button for every cup you actually need, and it lets that amount of water move into the lower compartment then boils it. i'll admit it pissed me off slightly when i saw the simplicity of it but this thing just looks cool when its working

Shame cos it is a nice idea but you do need as close to 100 for tea or it is shit whether in a bag or not.

erm the point is it doesn't - it gets it to 60-70 degrees which is nowhere near boiling or adequate for making tea. Nice idea but fails

I think this is a 'fad' thing' like steamers for veg etc.
I wouldn't mind one of those 'pffftt' steam injection water thingies you see in cafes mind.

im not sure how hot you fellas drink your tea but water at 100 c = steam, not water.

The water in your cup is only ever as high as about 70-75 degrees celcius.

This gadget looks great in my eyes and the tea snobbery that people have about fresh water and losing oxygen bollocks aint gonna make it less so. Good gadget, sadly its not really needed, when all its doing is replacing your kettle

Nope, water boils at 100c, steam condenses away from the surface and is therefore cooler. Steam can be further heated (superheated) but not in a kettle. As to the way tea is made, before the use of teabags EVERYBODY (I'm an old fart) made tea in a pot from loose tea. I happen to like quality tea made properly, imho there's a huge difference between that and a cup of piss made by waving a teabag at a cup of warm water and milk. If you like your tea that way that's fine, it's not snobbery just a difference in taste.

EDIT: The very hot steam from an Espresso steam pipe is made by heating the water under pressure.
