Default Just picked up my camera and thought "Oh No"

Just returned from Cyprus and my D40x has the stock 18 - 55 fitted with a UV Filter, which was all in my Lowepro Dryzone 100

I took the camera out of my bag to D/L the photos and though OH SHIT

No idea how this has happened as the bag/camera has never been dropped, squashed etc etc

Luckily its only the UV filter thats smashed.

Removed, blown out, dusted and inspected under a magnifying light and a magnifying eye glass and the lens is fine, no marks at all...phew

looks like ill need a new UV filter

Bet your glad you had the UV filter on...
Small price to pay for a new one compared to a new lens.

@Wingnut : yeah small price instead of a lens, dead pleased I had it on but weird how it smashed with the lens cap still on

@MML : The Lowepro Dryzone, should have more than protected it, this bag is bloody massive
    Spoiler:

now I need a new UV filter and also one for the Sigma 10-20 I just bought

Pretty bad, but lucky I always detach the lens when travelling, even though I also have a good Lowepro bag.

A touch of luck sir. I always bang a UV on my lenses for this purpose alone. Pick a cheap Hoya up off ebay often enough!!!

Jesus dude, that would have scared the crap outta me too.

I had a similar accident with my CPL filter a few months back. It ended up getting cracked. It has about 3 or 4 cracks originating from one point going across the radius of the filter. To be honest, when I take a photo, depending on the focal length, and how the filter is rotated, the cracks are either invisible on the image or very faint across it.

Regardless, I bought a new one because it's too much of a risk to have it on the camera in case it smashes and scratches the lens.. or cuts me.

...But thank god it was just your filter mate. phew.. !

Don't suppose it was left anywhere that was too hot was it. Only time I ever saw something like that was on my old eos1000 slr - the circular polarising filter smashed while we were in the pub enjoying a cool pint after a walk - I'd left the camera in the car boot for a couple of hours - red hot sunshine - went back and found the filter shattered. I assumed that the filter lens had been a tight fit in it's casing and when it was fitted to the camera and tried to expand it didn't have enough room to expand and shattered
