Default Shotgun licence, anyone got one?

hi im thinking of getting one, have moved out of the ghetto and been shooting a few times now and really enjoyed myself, just clay pigeon shooting, but can only go when my mate fancys it has he has the licence and gun.

what sort of cabinet do you need to comply with the police rules? and anyone recomend a place to buy, been on ebay but they all look like ugly metal fire proof boxes, think it will have to go in display as to my knowledge it has to be connected to an exteria wall.

    many thanks in advance

Mines bolted (through the triggerguard and round the barrel) with a shotgun lock, to the wall in the loft, the shells have to be kept in a seperate place under lock and key.

    Lukese,

Contact your police authority, I have spoken to mine (Essex Police) firearms officer who was very helpful. He explained the process and said it would take approx 6-8 weeks after various searches. What he did say was be factual when completing the form.

Whilst you can have a gun cabinet, I believe these need to be BS approved or similar and will be inspected by the Fire Arms Officer. You could always leave the gun at your gun club.

    Info HERE

    Happy shooting

Not for a shotgun they don't. I have a shotgun and firearms licence. If you hold a firearms licence, then ammunition needs to be locked away separate. This does not mean it needs to be somewhere else away from your guns. If you buy a gun cabinet with the internal top locking box you can store them in there.

When you apply for your licencse they ask you about any previous convictions, these include motoring offences and cautions. Make sure you tell them about them all even if they are classed as "spent"

Pick up a copy of Gun Mart to look for suitable safes, adverts galore in there, you're bound to find something to suit! there's also plenty shops advertising guns aswell, so again, you'll definately find something!

Im sure it cant be that easy to get the licence though, surely you need a good reason for wanting a gun, im guessing they dont just give them to anyone because they want to shoot clay pigeons.

That is a valid reason for wanting to own one.

Unlike Firearms there is no need to prove "good reason" - but the police will ask what you intend to use it for... clay pigeon or vermin control are the usual reasons.

How much are you looking to spend? For just under £1,000 new, I would go for a Beretta AL391. Then working down in price a Remington 1100 and for around £300 new a Hatsan Escort which I found a cheap reliable gun.

As deadly said, try Gun Mart as they have a big section on shotguns and normally review a model in each edition plus you will get an idea on prices.

Is where you go clay shooting an official ground as they normally stock guns and can give advice especially on finding a gun that fits you correctly.

Our kid got his firearms licence no problem but did/does have shooting rights to a large local area to help his case. The police were great tbh and inspected his house before and after he got his cabinets and gave advise where to place them etc.
He has a proper gun cabinet for his guns but the cabinet for the ammo is a safe I removed out of a house I renovated and was passed off fine by the police no problem.

I've heard a good way to get a shotgun licence is to say that you are wanting to purchase an antique one for investment purposes.
Drugs are only a problem to people who can't afford them.

been reading the reviews on the harson escort, it is getting some great reviews for a started shotgun, thats all im after, i looked at the al391 buts its too much money for the minute, ive only been shooting about 4 times but it is something i think i wasnt to take up, but dont want to spend a fortune and never use it, so think im gonna start with the hatsan.

Thanks for all the advice and yeah it really is that easy to get a shotgun licence, i got told not to bother when i lived in london as i had no use for it, but moving out ot kent i am now in a position to say i have clay shoots all around me and want to partake.

This has got me interested now!

What are the rules on transporting the gun, i.e. when your going to a shoot, can you just stick it in the boot of ya car?

my friends and all people i have ever seen at shoots have them in the boot of the car, but it is illegal to take the gun out of the house with out your licence on you.

If you are looking a buying a gun, ask at a local club as some clubs have their own gunsmith and advertise on the notice boards or even word and mouth. Therefore you can also try before you buy.

Personally, I think its a bad idea to have a shotgun in the house.

If I had one, in the last week alone, those blood Halagon spot lights in the kitchen (that seems to blow bulbs every 5 mins) would have got and extreme makeover. The Samsung Hi def TV would have got extra venting after the start of big brother... and the bloody 360 playing up all the time would now simply be space dust!

The only problem them is you need a slot on your firearms licence (FAC) to own one. A shotgun that is held on an ordinary shotgun licence can only hold 3 cartridges, one in the chamber and 2 in the magazine. So it is a lot harder to own one. The firearms licence is a lot harder to get and you would probably best if you were a member of somewhere that does "Practical shotgun". It is still possible to be granted under vermin control to get one though.

@ Bomberman. That is good advice for anyone starting up.

@ lukese. It is not illegal to leave your shotgun licence in the house if you are out with your gun but it can certainly save you a lot of time and trouble if you are stopped by the police. However, I think you need to take your licence with you if you have an FAC and you have a firearm in your possession.

I owned a Hatsan (mainly for pigeon and rook shooting) and it was a great gun and if you buy new, you get 3 years guarantee with it.

Although people use semi auto's at clay shoots, there are quite a few people who think you should only use an O/U or S/S for obvious safety reasons. I personally would buy an O/U first, but that's your choice.
