i would have thought they could only do to torrents what they did to kazaa etc is have fake users uploading shite files and then monitioring the ips from that, also port watching as many BT progs use a specific port as default which alot of people dont change.
they cant check exactly what ur downloading, unless all of a sudden theres some new piece of software all VM customers have to install soon to give us a smoother net speed or some bollocksa and ends up being a trojan for VMs viewing pleasure.
    Meh....

I love that advert before films and stuff. I remember seeing it and it said:
"You wouldn't steal a car would you?"

My mate said: 'I bloody would If I could click a link, it would be in my garage as quick as a flash and nobody would ever know!"

I hope other ISP's don't do this. If you used sites like rapidshare would they be able to monitor that instead? I'd love to know how it works.

    Class! lol

ISP's can only monitor traffic your using via your IP address /MAC Address and Port numbers you are downloading from. ie 80 for http or 21 or FTP. With Torrents you have the ability to choose what port you use. Say for example, opening port 80 on your utorrent would make a 700MB Xvid file your downloading look like normal internet 'surfing' bandwidth.

When you download from anywhere, you are downloading loads of tiny 'packets' that translate into a file once they are all downloaded. Your ISP cannot tell what you are downloading unless someone bubbles you up.

As for the 6.5 million' statistic. It's BS. When I first got on the internet in '95. It was a simple case of, what IS this internet good for... Free stuff!

Since then, everyone I know who has an internet connection has downloaded at least 1 MP3! So, what they gonna do? Bang everyone up? Fine everyone?

They simply dont have the manpower to do such a thing. Providing is one thing, monitoring is another.

You will get the 'example made out of you' speeches to people they do nick. But seriously, 60 million+ people in this country, 70% of which are internet users.

    Do the Maths.

SCARE TACTICS ALL THE WAY. It's another 'press release' that will lead nowhere.

All I can say is "bring on the 50Mb!" Then what?

Vm are just covering their backs so MPIA or whatever theyre called dont point the finger at them, if they really wanted to stop this sort of thing they could cut peoples connections but that wouldnt make them rich.
