Help Hard Drive 'chugging away' driving me insane

    Hello peeps,

Don't know if this has been a topic before, done a quick search of the posts in this section.

I hate it when I am not in control of my PC and this is my 1st experience with Vista. Couple of months old quad core medion PC 3gig ram etc. It occasionally chugs away on the HD and it's f-ing annoying, distracting and quite noisy. Usually on first boot and lasts for an hour or so. I've looked in task manager to see what is running, processes, services etc. IO reads / writes ???

I thought it maybe AVG so stopped it - still the HD chug
It may be Windows Defender but it doesn't show up in task manager ???

Could be some sort of indexing thing - dunno - baffled and in need of some good advice from my fellow members.

    Thanks

    Pete

its the Vista Indexing it adds every file to its indexing for fast search if you ever used the dam search just turn the dam thing off

    ==========
    Tweak Windows Vista's Indexing Options

Windows Vista works in the background to automatically index all the files in the Start Menu, user profile folders and files setup for offline access by default. If you have many files in these locations and the files change often, the indexing service may slow down your system's performance. Unlike Windows XP, Vista now allows you to easily tweak the indexing service following the steps below. It is recommended that you disable indexing for the other locations other than the Start Menu for maximum performance. Bear in mind that while this tweak speeds up your overall system performance, it will also slow you down when searching for files in those locations.

    1. Click on the Start Button and enter Indexing Options. Hit Enter and the Indexing Options should load.

    2. Click on the Modify button, followed by Show all locations.

    3. Scroll through the tree-view and uncheck all options except the Start Menu. Hit OK.

Note: For advanced users, you can also change other indexing options, like the file types to index, by clicking on the Advanced button.

TotallyRandom has it there. One of the main complaints of folk I know when they get Vista and am sick of the constant question, 'Will my hard drive fail quicker because of Vista?'

I turned off indexing ages ago and its been well worth it. It warns you that its off when you search but its no big deal.

Ive had this prob for ages now, tried turning off indexing, system restore but system volume information still constantly accessed my hardrive.
Ended up buying a new quiet hardrive.

....mmmm interesting, turned off the indexing, but it was only indexing office files. It is still there driving me bonkers. Will try a reboot now indexing is off.

Thanks all for your advice - if I get any more info I will post it here.

...no this hasn't cured it, just wondering whether this may be a HDD setting in the BIOS or whether it's a Medion backup or virus check in the background ??

I am also becoming suspicious of Defender, turned on the icon in the sys tray so I can access it when the noisy drive starts.

    Goto 'Start','Control Panel','Administative tools','Reliability and Performance Monitor'
Click 'Disk' and it will tell you whats using your hardrive. You can order it by 'read' or 'write' aswell.
With me it was summit like system volume information, but i couldnt turn it off.

Soul that monitor is good and it does seem to be SVI that is accessing the drive - reading a bit ont tweb it appears that SVI is involved in a sort of backup and recovery thing for Vista so probably not a good idea to switch it off, I believe this can be done in safe mode, but making sure the SVI folder is accessible in normal mode.....??

Still looking anyway - I hate it when I'm not in control of my PC !!!

Just out of curiosity what type of drive do you have?
Mine was a 500Gb seagate (sata), and tbh was just stupid, if a drive is that noisy they should give some kinda warning....

The drive I got to replace it was a 750Gb samsung spinpoint. The silence is golden.

@nedtheman, I would have loved to do that tbh, but going from a legit vista to a pirate xp just dont seem worth it, and end of the day xp will become obselete.
