I was thinking exactly the same. I try and keep as little as possible there. When asked to fix someones PC one of the first things I do is get rid of as many quicklaunch icons as possible.

I was running a 4 year old Windows XP install that ran almost as fast as when it was first installed...
Please dont make bad assumptions

As for memory usage 1.2GB out of 3GB on a 8 day uptime system.
If you've got the power, use it - if not then dont... but don't tar everyone with the same brush

bollocks. all those icons increase loading times because reading them off disk is sllllooooooowwwww. i don't care if you've got 15k rpm sas drives. it's still gonna alow you comp down A LOT! disk access is the bottle nexk...
