hp pavilion hdd upgrade

help! i've got a hp pavilion t461.uk pc and the hdd has gone on it - it was originally the typical hard drive with a hidden partition, however i've put in a larger capacity hdd (300gb, the original was 160gb), but it now only shows this drive as having 127gb of free space whereas it should be nearer 300gb. if i gi into the bios it recognises the drive as being 300gb, but when you setup windows and come to the format/partition hdd , it only shows this drive as 127gb. the drive is set to cable select as was the original drive.
-any ideas please

I take it you're running windows xp? If you are then you need to have the service packs installed

Also Right Click My computer > Manage > Go to Disk Management What dose it show your Drive in there any un partition space?
