not much wrong with those mate.

if i'm going to be critical i'd say:
    1) you've chopped of half of the girl on the right and blue bird thing on the left
    4) a bit too tighter crop? - remember it's easier to shoot at a wider angle and then crop later
    6) Could just do with the horizon levelling - easily done in PS.

I'm no expert just my 2p worth.

a good solid start though, keep em coming

some of the photo's are fine
a little more attention to detail could make some of the photo's great

for instance ( i'm not having a go just my observations )

1 like wilp says about being chopped if you crop the photo to the 2 in centre it would give more to focus on

2 turning the camera to portrait ( or even croping ) would focus more on the girl i think the photo is too busy ( too much background )

3 fine has a lot to look at to keep you interested

4 a little too closely cropped for my likeing maybe a few inches either side might help ( apart from that all good )

    5 fine

6 a little straightning apart that, fine

the macro shots are good just a little reservation on the crop i think you need to leave a bit of space round the subject

from what i can see your doing fine if you spend a bit of time thinking about composition you will turn good photo's into great photo's

    hope this helps....

a better camera wont imrove these shots trueblue, the main problem with them all is composition.

bear in mind that any photograph (unless its abstract or something) has a focal point and in order for the viewer to understand and appreciate this certain things need to be happening, the main problem with these in that respect is parts of your subject are out of the frame, the tips of the butterflys wings, the dinosours feet etc. when you look though your viewfinder (or on your LCD screen) think what parts of the image arnt needed and recompose accrdingly, consider the rule of thirds.

Anything that isnt the subject but is part of the image should ideally compliment the scene and draw you to the subject more, as seen in the one you have taken of the spiky catapillar, the stalk he is on creates a nice line across the frame which the eye likes to follow and the empty stalk compliments that without being a distraction.

One other thing, does your camera have a 3:2 or widescreen type mode? these current images are 4:3 which isnt the norm for photographs, the general rules of photography (like the thirds) works better in 3:2.

some compacts allow you to fit adaptors which then accept standard SLR filters, my old sony compact could do this but it was only after buying a DSLR and reading about lenses and filters that I actually understood this.

I wouldnt worry about that just yet anyway, none of them will improve your ability at taking photos. If yuo want an easy way to do that, search for professional artists that do similar work to the shots you are trying to achieve. Even if you dont fully understand the principles of composition, looking at stuff from people that do helps a lot.

Andy Rouse is a good one for Animal stuff, not sure about Insects etc.
