    Default Test Syllabus ?

    hi guys

got my bike now, opted to buy a bike instead of DAS as cant get the time off work.

so im going out every night, getting more confident now.

i just wanted to ask where i can get/buy an outline of things i should be learning?

i know the usual, u-turns, emergency break, observation signal position, life savers when coming to parked car, lifesaver when moving from say 40 to a 30 zone. lifesavers in general (when turning corners)

any else i need to practice/learn?

    Thanks!

Hi there. You will pick up a lot of roadsense just by riding around on your new bike. You will come across emergency stops almost daily I am afraid, there are some right pricks out on the road right now especially in town here in Brighton, seems every other car someone is not looking, on the phone etc etc.

Anyhow, sure you know all this already, the only thing I would suggest you get nailed is the U-Turn. Everything else is a piece of piss. My first test I failed after five mins because we went and done the U-Turn first. I got around but at the last second I looked down to where I was going. I thought I was going into the kerb so flapped and hit the front brake. Road was damp so I locked up the front and slid into the kerb stopping just afterwards. No real drama just a bad judgment really. If I had not looked down I would have passed!

Second test go the U-Turn out the way again in the first few min's. Done it and relaxed a bit after that and simply rode around the rest of the test which was basically riding around town and that.

I found whilst practising for the turns I couldn't get it right at all. I had no technique, no real way of doing it, it was a case of trying it and seeing what happened. On my test It was one of the times I actually got it right, it was hit and miss wether I got it right or not.

So, just practise your U-Turns, the rest of it is just riding around really.

Make sure you remember to cancel indicators after a turn, know loads of people who have failed because of that they are very very strict on it. As for u turns my instructor allways said to make sure you keep looking where you want to go.

i am afraid that you have left it too late now!!

the new test comes into force on the 29th september and all bike tests up to that time are allocated, the DSA are not booking tests after that time at the moment.

there will be a huge backlog of tests to clear and there will be massive teething problems with the new system anyway.
do your test next spring when everything has settled down.

why not just book a few hours with an instructor- you dont have to book a full course.

its not just a matter of riding the bike from A to B, its doing it the way your examiner wants it done - and we dont know which examiner you will have, your local instructor will though..........

just check the mirrors there mate, only do lifesavers when you are about to change position or turn.

mirrors must be checked before any potential speed change

i dont actually use any written notes or whatever, its all in my head!
i just use a few pics of local roundabouts/junctions from google earth and a dry wipe pen

but its all in The Official DSA Guide to Learning to Ride Book (ISBN 10 0115529020 )

and The Official DSA Guide to Riding - The Essential Skills (ISBN 10 0115526447 )

also have a read here for the new test requirements

    good luck,
observations and forward planning are the most important things.

u-turns are very easy (after your instructor and you work out YOUR way of doing it)
