Right I've made some more changes to the script.
I've converted all the images used from PNG to JPG (Used up all my bandwidth last month), as the JPG's are smaller in physical size.

I know I'm a newbie here, but I had a read through this as I've been interested in using Linux for a while now and normally install the OS, play about for a bit, then go back to XP. However, your guide on how to install, setup and use Ubuntu has got me interested again and I will be following this guide soon (have already downloaded and burnt the .iso, just need to find the time to install it).

I think however, since this is a newbie guide to Linux, it might be worthwhile explaining which image to download as the names got me a bit confused. For example, the i386 version implies that it's for Intel processors and the AMD64 version implies that it's for AMD64 processors, however, I have been advised that the i386 version can be used for any 32-bit processor, whilst you should use the AMD64 version for any 64-bit processor. Therefore, I downloaded the "Desktop CD for 64-bit PC (AMD64) computers" version even though I have a 64-bit Intel dual core processor.

Can you, or any other Linux guru, confirm that this is true please?

Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use the Intel x86 images instead.

according to the above blurb it says this will be fine for amd64 bit cpus and Xeon and Core 2Duo cpus so it should be fine
you could also use the 32bit version on your 64 bit cpu like I have done , note the script now works with Ubuntu 8.10 too

I did the same when he first posted, I used Mint distro (which is based on Ubuntu) and all same scripts etc worked.
I have had my desktop running Mint ever since and no regrets, I too was one who installed linux and took it off two days later many many times before the o/p guide.

Is there something wrong with the skype repository Tomm ?Someone that I pointed to your guide is having a problem with it and cant skip past it to continue with the rest

pumpman its working fine on my laptop, but will try on a fresh build later on.

Try getting them to type the following in a terminal window:

sudo apt-get install skype

and let me know if they get any error messages.

Lou_smorals glad to hear you have stuck with linux. How are you finding Mint?

AllenP - Good to see your taking the plunge, same above applies. Let us know if you need any guidance, but as you can see there are other people (pumpman for one) on hand to help out as well.

Reading through the posts on here, and seeing the people giving Linux a try makes the time and effort I put into putting this guide together more than worthwhile!

I don't have an ipod myself, but I know the following apps will let you transfer to your ipod.

Amarok
Banshee
Rhythmbox
Songbird

You can install the first 3 via apt-get

i.e

sudo apt-get install amarok

Songbird is a slightly different install from what I remember so I'll look into it and post a howto for you.

just got a net book for xmas with this on and its fucking brilliant. I honestly thought i would install xp straight over it but im really pleased with it. I just need to try some apps now.

Floola relies on libstdc++5. To install it (under Ubuntu) type sudo apt-get install libstdc++5 via terminal. To enable playback you'll need either gstreamer or lib xine to be installed. If both are installed gstreamer will be used.

To start Floola, just double click on application icon or from console type ./Floola. If it still doesn't start, make sure it has correct permissions typing chmod +x Floola via terminal from the folder where you extracted Floola.

Nice to see people on the linux front out there.

Props to the guide I'd just be concerned people would switch over assuming there going to be able to use it similar to windows xp. It is much more difficult to use becuase you'll have to make direct changes to text files to set up proxy servers etc.. you can't even play mp3's out the box. Be warned it can sometimes be more hassle that its worth if you are just a casual user! (e.g my intel gfx chipset doesn't allow ubuntu to shutdown properly and its a bug in the drivers) but don't let this put you off it just takes time. Any way if you do switch and its too much trouble use fixmbr to revert your windows boot record.

I recently installed kubuntu 9.04 and I have to say I prefer the layout of the new KDE release. I think its a quite an easy prosses to upgrade ubutnu to the KDE desktop it should just be 2 package is i remember correctly. People should give it a try its much better.

And i'm not sure if it was mentioned but check out http://www.canonical.com/projects/ubuntu/unr - the ubuntu netbook remix. This can be installed off a usb stick I think and is geared towards netbook users who I noticed there were a few of.

Hi tombot, I dual booted 9.04 with vista using grub, if i dont press anything at the bootup menu to selct ubuntu or vista, it boots into Ubuntu. Is there a way to have it boot to Vista unless I select Ubuntu. It makes it easier for my missus to still use the PC if it boots to vista. Cheers

You will have to get your hands dirty and edit the boot file in ubuntu.
The file is called menu.lst in \boot\grub\. What you need to do is set the default boot to match the entry for windows in this file (For mine it is 4 I think - 3 versions of ubuntu and a space/divider, then windows).
I had to do just this for my missus.
