Click the start button and type "msconfig" then press enter.

Click services and find "Disable UAC" and highlight it, click "Launch" and reboot - problem solved.

and then disable the security center alerts to get rid of the annoying "windows has detected UAC is switched off" alerts lol

before vista came out people hated xp and now all they all love it and wont let it go...anyway you want something better than xp try these, ubuntu, suse, backtrack, osx, freebsd,
    http://www.ubuntu.com/
    http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org
    http://www.remote-exploit.org/backtrack.html
    http://www.freebsd.org/

personally i use a mac most of the time, other than that ive got a linux (debian) box that i use but a few weeks ago i built a new system and threw vista ultimate on it to use the media centre with a sat card i picked up, and to be honest other than a few teething troubles its been fine, after some updates the networking didnt play right, updated the drivers and all was well again, now im not saying that theres not people out there thats not having or had issues with vista but seriously its not that bad, if anything i prefer it to xp and it seems just as stable (considering its a windows box) ive gotta say though i think its just more "cool" to rag on vista than it is to say that you dont mind it or that you like it

so here i sit as uncool as ever...i like vista, it looks good, it doent seem to be as stable as a bambi on ice its been every bit as stable as my linux box (unlike my mac which seem to get a kernel panic at the drop of a hat just lately lol although i know whats causing it)

I never hated XP, I always liked it, because its more stable/reliable than all other versions of Windows (apart from maybe Windows 3.1). However when compared to Linux, its not that great.

But it the best Windows OS out there IMO.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I was thinking of trying it on my laptop. Bad idea? XP runs fine with next to no issues. Would it be stupid to try 2.1ghz Intel Centrino, 2gb RAM, 64mb ATI GPU etc......?

Should be ok mate. My laptop has a 2.2GHz Centrino Duo (Core2Duo for laptops), 2GB DDR2 RAM and hybrid graphics card (NVIDIA 8400M GS, 64MB for "speed" and an integrated Intel XMA 1300 for "stamina").

It came pre-loaded with Vista Business, which ran fine, but not a good as XP, and it was less reliable than XP.

If I were you I would make a dual boot system to test it out. If you like it move over for good, if not then delete the Vista partition and use your XP disc to fix the MBR so it loads like it used to (like it does just now)....

@djad if your laptop is a dualcore try the mac os on it you may need to mess with it a little to get it working but id have thought that as a multiboot system youve not got anything to loose (either osx or a linux distro)

@herman, sorry fella i wasnt having a dig at you i was thinking about the way companys like dell and others have fought to get xp a longer life as if vista is as bad as it could possibly be, when in truth its not that bad,

It's not a dual core, just a Centrino "M" (normal)

Make a dual boot system and test it out, then you can judge for yourself if its any good.

i tried it on my centrino m laptop (single core) and it didnt work whats so ever, i tried it on a dualcore laptop and it installed without a problem, personally id give osx a miss and have a go with a flavour of linux or freebsd (pretty much what osx is anyway just less customised than what apple do to their's)

Go for it mate! Its really good....BUT its a PAIN to set up! I just put it on my PS3 and have had a nightmare doing it.

However it's now running a charm, but I still couldn't get my WPA WLAN to work. However I have a BT Vision box near my PS3 which is connected to the BTHomeHub via 200Mbps powerline adapters.

What I did was connect the powerline adapter to a switch I have lying around via ethernet, then I plugged my PS3 and my BT Vision box into the switch and it all works fine now.

If you follow tombott's guide it will make it easier. Also, you wont have the hassle I had if you install it on a PC. Just that its not as "ready" for PS3 as it is for PC.

if you wanted to have a go with it before you install it just download a live ubuntu iso burn that and run it off the disk, then if you hate the way it does something youve not wasted hours getting it working

If only M$ made Windows live CD's so you could try out new versions of Windows without installing it and finding out its crap!

Yea, I know you get USB versions of office, windows, etc. It would just be nice of M$ added it to their install disks too.
