Bitch of a 360

Evening fellows mate f mine has just bought a second hand modded 360 But he's tryed a few games in it and it will play my copy of tiger woods 08 and an original forza 2 and viva pinata but that's it! it won't play naff all else (that we've tried anyway) he say's he's just gonna take it apart and try pissinn about with it but i thought i'd go down this route first for him so can any one shed some light on the predicament for me???? t.i.a

What do you mean by "won't play".
Will it not read the DVD cos its poor media or cos the drive is shafted?

when i say wont play it comes up as unreadable disc on his, but play's them all sound on mine (well my son's)

just do a lazer tweek if u have a multimeter or ask some one els to do it or use a better media

If it plays at least SOME games then its NOT a bad flash. 99.9% sure its the laser or poor media.

Get some good media (Verbs or something with Ritek dye). If that dont work, then fit a new laser, job done! Also its always handy to make sure you have the latest FW, so if you can, then re-flash it to iXtreme 1.4 for "completeness", but that will not stop it from reading some games and loading others.

Could be this. To rule this out download DVDMulleter and load the disc. If it says they are properly stealth patched then its not the game itself at fault.

Another way to test this is to try one of your newer games (like GTA IV) which are guaranteed to be stealth patched. If they dont work in his machine, but work in yours then its def a laser problem or poor media.

You can make the console read poor media with a new laser, but I would recommend the new laser AND better media.

Thanks fr the input herman i cant do anythin with the media cuz i dont do the games myself you see i buy them off a guy i know that does um
but surely if it was due to poor media then they would'nt spin up perfect in mine everytime

i am lookin into burnin the games myself but just have'nt got round to checkin if my writer is capable of burning dual layers
it's a writemaster and in the device manager it comes up as
TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-H552U
if that means anythin to anyone

You might just have a good enough laser to read them, where as your mate doesn't. Also are they labeled? If so that will also make it harder for the laser to read.

I labeled a few games a while ago and they stopped working. As soon as I peeled the label off they worked perfectly again.

Simple way of telling if your drive can burn dual layer just do a search in google forwritemaster TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-H552U and look at the specs ,or a even lazy way is if you have nero, everyone has most days do a goto tools and check system it should have a cross on dl if its compatible m8 ,but really you should read up about burning disc's, if your going to start out do a search in the forums m8 its all there

Try holding the power button down for about 2 seconds before letting go as a shot in the dark, the NME-360 V2 needs this, it also requires the games to be 'associated' with the chip. I ususally associate every game b4 I burn even if it says it appears to be already patched.

I guess you could test for this chip by putting in a game you know works and dont hold the power button in or better still turn it on with the controller, then do the same but hold for two seconds.

I would recommend taking it apart though to find out exactly what the mod is, theres lots of guides on the net and its pretty easy with a flat blade precision screwdriver, I did it a few times on mine (forgot this, forgot that etc).

As HermaN said, verbs are good, its all I use, when they are on sale..or I wait, sometimes months for the next sale, so try a game on a verb.

I doubt it needs a special method to boot up, because as he said in the OP some games work, but others dont.

However I would also recommend taking it apart as you said, just to have a look and see if a chip is fitted or if its a FW hack (most likely).

You're gonna need to take it apart anyway if its the laser at fault.

Right thanks for all the help i'll tell him to just take it apart im sure between us we'll get it sorted and just as a last note nero is tellin me that i can burn +R DL Discs and lookin at the collection of games i've got they are mostly on +R's so all i can say is YAY lol usually i pay a 5'er a game(printed) but 25 for 12 quid sounds a hell of a lot better to me

Yup, DVD+R DL is what's used for 360 games.

I use these discs because they have the RitekD01 dye, and not had a single bad burn yet!

If I cant get them I use verbs.

Printable discs....yes I can get them dead easy for the same price as non-printable. As for printer to print the discs with? No, dont have one.

I was going to buy one a few months ago when I had the cash, but decided to spend my money on better things and just not print or label my discs.

i always buy the same verbs, and for some reason a batch of 50 discs i got would not work on my xbox, i was getting the same problem as u, so i gave all my discs to my mate (including the ones i writen on) they all work fine for him, so he gave me his verbs (excact same, even from the same shop) and they worked for me, odd eh
