    Question Router or Switch ?

    Hey,

I'm slowly buying bits and pieces for my flat, but im not sure weather to buy a router or a switch.

I will be using it to distribute the internet connection to two computers. But one of them will be a media server / player which will be streaming video and music around the flat to various devices e.g. xbox, xbox360, hifi via squeezebox duet.

Can i have your advise please.

    Thank you

Router. Also most routers have 4 or 5 port switches built in.

    Yeh second that router.

as you will need some thing on the network to assign devices a IP address and also connect to the internet.
router is the best for the job

Depends on what the current set up is. Not much point buying a router if the existing internet connection already come in via a router of sorts. Even some adsl modems are just 1 port routers. If that's the case and the router is just short of ports then a switch would be the easiest option.

Some more info on what's there already would help to be able to say for sure.

Also it depends on the distribution of the devices around the building. It might not make sense to have all of the ports right beside where the internet connection is.
