    Default Unmountable boot volume error

I'm having trouble with my little ones netbook and a blue screen of death. I'm getting an unmountable boot volume error then it restarts. I've created a bootable USB with the recovery console on it which starts like it's going to load then I get the same blue screen on that too. With it being a netbook, it doesn't have a disc drive so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do next. Any ideas would be appreciated. Cheers.

If there is important data on there then attempt data recovery before proceeding. If it is vital data I would take an image of the drive using CloneZilla, then run testdisk to try and recover the data, then format and reinstall the OS from scratch. PartedMagic is a great BootCD with Testdisk and Clonezilla on it.

If the netbook allows booting from USB then use a tool such as YUMI or UnetBootin to put your bootCD images onto a USB drive. You can then boot to the USB as if you were booting to a CD.

Your HDD may be physically damaged or there may be a corrupted partition, either of these can cause the problem. I successfully recovered 99% of the data on a drive with this error yesterday using Testdisk.

    Default Unmountable boot volume error

My wife pulled the plug without switching it off so I'm not sure whether it's physically damaged or not. Any idea why I can't boot to the recovery console though? Will I be able to boot one of the other program's you suggest?

No idea why you can't boot to your recovery console, is your USB recognised in BIOS and are you going into the boot selection menu to boot from it? Did you format it to make it bootable? I like the HP USB utility for this purpose.

Which OS is it? If it's windows Vista or 7 you should be able to tap F8 at boot then select repair my computer and see if the built in utils can help you. But as before if the data is important attempt recovery or make an image of the drive before attempting repairs.

I would give the tools I mentioned a shot and go from there mate, it may be when the recovery console is reading the attached drives searching for windows installs it crashes.
