    Info Qnap NAS/Media servers

These are great and I've found somewhere doing them at a great price

    http://www.datakits.co.uk/store/adva...s=qnap&x=0&y=0

I bought the QNAP 500GB TS-109 II for £199.99, the cheapest I could find elsewhere was about £270, get 'em while they're hot!

Cheers Blaggard, been after one of these.
I've seen that you can install SabNZB+ on these things too.

I got all the instant OKs and can log on to accounts and see it all. They say to leave it 5 days and yet their shipping quotes Special D or ParcelForce fo more valuable items. I got a reply to an email today saying that it had been despatched last Thursday (as on the order page) However they have not supplied tracking as asked. I'm probably panicking over nowt but I googled the company earlier today and got loads of crap about them, recently they seem to have been better and they did at least reply today. I paid for mine with Paypal so we'll see what happens, I'll keep this updated, here's hoping!

    Edit:
Where did you see the stock availability? I can't see that anywhere

    Ignore me, found it now!

If they turn out alright I'll get one of the fanless freecom drives they have on special, I have a couple and they are great, just hang it off the Qnap and instant expansion!

No reason why not, twonky is included. I see no reason why it should not stream 1080p provided the codecs are all in place, just like streaming from your PC

Guys, am I missing something here? If you are going to spend £200 why wouldn't you get:

One of these for £116 delivered (dual core 2.3ghz xeon server with 250GB, 1GB ram and DVDROM) ... http://uk.insight.com/apps/productpr...t_id=HPIA04FQU
Add an additional 500GB (bringing you up to 750GB) for £40 delivered here ... http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/...roductId=31456
And an additional 2GB (bringing you to 3GB) here for £42 ... http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/list...t%20ML110%20G5

And throw something like 64 bit OpenSUSE 11 on there?

Not only would it be significantly faster and have more disk space but it would be more useful, e.g. act as an internet gateway/proxy/mail server/etc.

Yes, I know setting up an OS and installing an HDD and bit of RAM is not for everyone but considering this is generally a technical forum I would have thought most people here have the skills.

Is it really going to be that much more? 20%? 30%? Is that something people are bothered about given they are getting something *significantly* better, e.g handle multiple 1080p streams around the house.

Are these NAS drives any good? I had a WD one (well 2 as they both fucked up!) last year and the transfer speeds were shite! That was on top of the limit of file sizes you could transfer across.....

I did not just want external storage and the Qnap is storage and more, I and others have tried alternatives but the Qnap is just.....better!
It IS a good deal for a Qnap, I wasn't including alternative makes of NAS in my comparison.
