Question Tattoo to celebrate my sons birth, ideas please?

My son's gonna be 1 on the 1st of September, and I'd like something permanent to keep him close to me.

Initially thought of getting his name tattooed somewhere, but then thought that a skinheaded bloke with 'Jake' in a heart on his arm might attract the wrong kind of attention!

Now I think I'm leaning more towards his date of birth in another language, ie Roman numerals, Chinese symbols, etc, but as it's gonna be my first ever tattoo, I'm not really sure what I want or even where I want it, but was thinking probably chest or shoulder.

Any advice and ideas much appreciated.

Obviously, don't bother getting inked if your not sure what you want. Some people take years to find the right tattoo for them - don't expect to find the right one for you by browsing a single parlor or looking at some Internet flash.

That isn't to say that these can't be great sources of inspiration, but as it's your son, I think the only way you'll get something that means as much as your lad does is to design it yourself, or at least try to.

Take your time when choosing, as a tattoo's for life - not just your son's birthday

I've been thinking about getting a tattoo for 15 years now, but could never find anything that meant enough to me to have it inked on me for the rest of my life, but he does, just need to work out exactly what to put in it though.

As for designing it myself, not a hope in hell, I can't even draw a straight line with a ruler!!!

Just get the date and his name. nice and simple.

I remember a scene in a Kurt russle film where he gets a laser tattoo on his chest (solider) i'd just have a date and name on my chest (left side)

That's what I fancy, but I've always been a fan of Roman numerals, so might get his name and DOB like that, ie :-

    Code:
        Jake
    I.IX.MMVII
Or possibly his initials in the same style, gonna pop into the tattooist 2 minutes down the road from me in the morning.

Roman numerals can be a bit iffy. The standard format can look good. 01-09-2008 or do it in year order 2008-09-01

they do a hand printing kit in some of the baby shops (you dip the kids hand in paint and then on to the paper with a verse on it) and to be honest i couldnt think of anything better than that, get a hand print and the verse if it were me id go with the handprint at the top and the verse going down the outer bicep

this is the verse (from memory!!)

There used to be so many of my fingerprints to see,
On the furniture and walls from sticky, grubby me,
But if you stop and think a while,
    You'll see I'm growing fast,
    Those little handprints disappear,
You can't bring back the past.
    So here's a small reminder,
    To keep not wipe away,
Of how those tiny hands once looked,
To make you smile one day.

    hth

Sounds like a great idea, but far too much ink for my first tattoo, especially as his hands are huge!

Hand print and DOB on my chest mightn't be too bad though.
