Default Is your WiFi being used illegally? Track the culprits

    Source: http://www.greyhatindia.com/2008/08/...-the-culprits/

If you thought that its impossible to detect the physical location of a person in your Wireless Lan (WiFi), then read on. A tool called Moocher Hunter can help you physically track the users connected in your WiFi network. This tool would come handy for network admins or police authorities who would want to spot and catch hackers using WiFi for illegal purposes . Recently the Indian police raided the Mumbai home of an American expatriate after someone used his open wireless network to send an email that took responsibility for a bomb blast that killed at least 42 people.Actually someone used wardriving to use his internet connection to send that sensitive e-mail. Good things about MoocherHunter-
    1. Its free to use.
    2. It can predict the physical location of the computer using the WiFi connection.

The algorithms applied use various signal variables to accurately predict the position of the connected laptop/machine. MoocherHunter™ identifies the location of an 802.11-based wireless moocher or hacker by the traffic they send across the network. If they want to mooch from you or use your wireless network for illegal purposes (e.g. warez downloading or illegal filesharing), then they have no choice but to reveal themselves by sending traffic across in order to accomplish their objectives. MoocherHunter™ enables the owner of the wireless network to detect traffic from this unauthorized wireless client (using either MoocherHunter™’s Passive or Active mode) and enables the owner, armed with a laptop and directional antenna, to isolate and track down the source.

the problem with tools like this is anyone who is likely to want to use it won't need to as their networks will be secure. The people who really are getting hacked/have open networks will no know of this tool let alone know how to use it.

I have a Wii, N82, 4 PCs and Xbox 360 and I've never had a problem typing in a WPA key. Takes about 30 seconds (maybe longer on the wii and 360 as there is no keypad) and only needs to be set once.

i had loads of problems setting up with WPA so i took it off, then i decided to allow only the MAC ids of my stuff, again caused me problems, so back to an open system for me

Cool. I've no interest in doing this myself but would love to see some results posted and whether it actually works.

Cheers fella, another one for my utils pack.. just to let anyone know who is interested in this, there are a few things to bear in mind. I've had a brief look at it and it's a knoppix flavour of linux which you put on to a bootable CD (No real knowledge of linux is needed as it has tuts etc.) and has a lot of integrated wifi apps/tools preloaded. It's an alternative to the better known backtrack livecd which I've been using for some time now, this one seems to perhaps have a more logical layout of apps etc. Some device drivers are pre-loaded if you have the right card to run with this.

You will also need a wifi device capable of doing a couple of things out the norm, namely one which you can put in to monitor mode as well as capable of packet injection if you want to run some of the apps.

I'm quite secluded so I should be ok.

The DS is a pain because it does not support some of the encryptions, I just grant access based on MAC Addresses now.

Are you neighbours members of DF or likely to have this software? If not, then if they are stupid enough to have an unsecured connection, I doubt you will have anything to worry about.

Any feedback from people that are using it?

Not DF members but are reasonably tech savvy, however they still have an unsecured wireless network. Use my own connection for desktop and xbox the neighbour kindly contributes the connection for the laptops.
I found unsecured networks to be fairly common used to be a rep and managed to stop in residential areas all over the country and gain net access by scanning for unsecured networks.....

Did you burn it to disc and boot your pc with it mate? It should load to a desktop looking theme then.
