please note that the xperia is nothing lik the omnia, i used both yesterday and the omnia s nowhere near as user friendly as the xperia, and very fidgety compared to an x1, also the touch HD though it is a good phone is an exclusive phone to orange only no other netwrk will get it as it sht blackberry storm, that is exclusive to voda and verizon. i will send some pics up for the x1. i have found that to begin with the x1 seemed slow, not annoyingly slow but once u had used the same apps a few times it was fine. when opening the keypad when the screen flicks from vertical to horizontal i find its a bit slow but its not a bad thing, but i still maintain that its a very good peice of kit

I had worried about speed...... the way my 2.1fw iPhone is at the moment i doubt the x1 could be much worse, it's shocking!!

What i really wanna know (and i know no-one will have the answer) is will it be upgradable to windows mobile 7 when it's released!?

I personally do not think the OS can be upgraded.

I'm only basing that on the fact that you can't upgrade WinCE as it's likely to be embedded in ROM.

I'd guess maybe core parts of WinMobile are in ROM too.

My main point about comparing the X1 to the Omnia, was that they both have WinMobile, both are roughly the same spec and hardware. I know the actual phone interface is likely to be completely different. The HTC HD does have a lot more memory and the bigger and higher res screen makes it tick a few more boxes. Just IMO tho of course ;-)

There are always custom Roms available for Windows phones.

I know what you mean blaggard mate, but custom firmwares are not usually an actual upgrade.

What I'm saying is that, an actual O/S upgrade (windows 6 to 7) isn't likely to fit in the same ROM space as the original. Different requirements, so to speak.

Custom firmwares (WinMobile or generic phone ones) are what they say, modified versions. An actual upgrade is likely to exceed current designs. Any phone these days are far from future proof. Even tho they are becoming more useful, camers, gps, movies, songs etc'. They are designed with a reasonably short life span, and not designed to actually be upgraded.

You may be able to enhance features or make things function more efficiently, but Xp to Vista in mobile terms, i don't think will be possible.

Not unless things go open source. Cue Android...

I still think the iPhone's better but I need the ability to use it as a modem! I've had a couple of Windows mobiles and PDA's before that but the X1 is more than just another WinMobile, so far it's great!

Was PDAnet on the iPhone not good enough to act as a modem?

My iPhone is so slow on the 2.1 FW that i'm hoping for something quicker, and i;ve got to say the keyboard is a massive selling point for me..... the biggest thing i'm worried about is SonyEricsson phones are notorious for faults & breaking.

I have an iPhone from the first couple of months, I don't want to tether my macbook to a gprs modem and don't want a locked 3G iPhone.
I still rate the iPhone as the best mobile I ever owned and fuck me I've had most!!

Ive been using the X1 at work for about a week now and i'm not a fan. Its more like a brick with a touch screen tbh. Maybe im just a fan of the candy bar phones but the OS isn't great either.

If like me you want to tether to a Macbook your choices are limited, PDAnet only offers Bluetooth (not needed as I can do that with the mac's networking software) which is limited for speed. The commercially available USBModem (software) did not work for me so I 'm using WMwifirouter and can highly recommend it.

How does that stack up to the other smart phones. Was a bit wary of it as it seems they are holding back on features (like they did with the iPhone) at launch.

Yes, I have heard that is possible with a few devices, so long as the hardware is compatible. That said WM5 and WM6 are fairly similar. WM7 will be a fair bit different tho IIRC, and will not be compatible with a lot of older devices. It will have more features for touch and motion and be more like vista in terms of GUI.

My main point is, don't expect old hardware to run new software.
