    Default PC Boot problem.

Tried the usual process of elimination and have gotten stumped on this one.

My daughters computer stopped booting up. It manages the POST fine.
When the Windows XP logo is ment to show (with the progress bar) the screen goes blank and doesnt come back on.

I have swapped the RAM, the graphics card and even the motherboard...

The post is clearly visable at boot so, I guess that rules out the graphics card. The processor and RAM is tested and goes though fine.

I've tried reinstalling Windows XP. But when the Blue Windows Setup screen is ment to appear, it remains blank/black.

I CAN get into the BIOS setup, but everything seems correct to me.

Any ideas? It's really stumped me.

I have it setup right now with my KVM switch, so can try anything anyone suggest pretty quickly.

A long shot mate, but have you tried a different monitor? Could be a problem with switching refresh rates or something, I'd be surprised if it is, but you seem to have covered most other things I would think of.

Na, monitor is happy days. It's the one I'm using now.

It's a pretty good one and usually handles any refresh rate I throw at it.

I guess it could be the KVM switch (but it hasnt given hassle before).

I'll try it direct to it and see if it helps.

The strangest thing is I've changed the motherboard over completely for another and yet it still happens!

    --EDIT--
Nopem still does the same thing. I'm getting my mini comp hover out now and gonna clean out the contacts on the AGP. Although, still dont think it'll change anything. Will try another Graphics card too...

Wow i'm stumped lol. Tried using xp disc recovery console to potentially fix bootup? Sounds liek your gonna have to wipe the harddrive but by the sounds it it seems not even that would fix the problem

Quite happily wipe the drive. That's put another spanner in the works. I'm gonna try another drive!
Gotta XP Pro SP2 on standby once I get it working.

Kinda thinking it boils down to the CPU, it seems to be the only thing that it can be (It's the only thing I cant change! lol)

    Greyfox!!

Your a diamond! Seems like it was the drive. I've swapped HD's out and it's gone into setup now. I'm gonna wipe the original drive and see it helps.

WEIRD! I though setup runs, loads and gets ready for install even without a HD installed!

All sorted. Musta been a corrupt drive somehow. Partitioned and formatted with MY computer. Setup started first time.

Should keep my little horrors quiet for a bit!
