Default first impressions of the canon 50d

not done a lot with this camera yet but my first impression when it works is good

sadly this ones going back on monday for a replacement had a couple of odd faults with it
err 99 on occasion when in continuous shooting mode , busy lock up and not starting up when battery is inserted.

i noticed the battery thing in the shop but thought it was the shop assistant but when i got home and fully charged the battery it did the same for me it's not done it since but once is enough
the err 99 happens on continuous shooting mode i think it's only happened twice but 2 times to many for me
the busy lock up was the final straw i rang the shop and a replacement should be ready for me on monday

the quality of the images seems very good but not had enough time with it yet ( not to mention the crappy weather ) to test properly

all in all i like the camera and the faults have only occured rarely hopefully the replacement will be fault free

a couple of images i managed to get
    all shot at 500 iso

Why have you upgraded to a 50d from a 40d???

Stunning images mate.. 500mm focal length. NICE. What lens is you have for those?

Being honest mate, I've never been a massive fan of "ornithology" style photo's but these are really really nice. I love the second one because the bird is on the floor as opposed to the standard on a branch shots

theres a couple of reasons mainly to do with the pixel count and the micro AF adjustment
the pixel count because i'l be getting a large format printer soon ( canon ipf6100 ) so i can get into large canvas prints and the extra pixels will count and the micro AF adjustment is a very handy feature it allows you to get the very best out of the lenses you use

the second shot (robin) is a beauty

how much is your 40D up for? My bro is thinking baout getting rid of hs canon film camera and moving to digital, and he thought the 40D would be similar in spec to what he has now.

you say you used a sigma 170-500mm, but i can't find that, is it a 150-500mm?

the 40d is in BST here

    http://www.digital-forums.com/showthread.php?t=384909

and the lens is this one

    http://www.dpreview.com/news/0511/05..._170-500mm.asp

costs around 500 quid and for the money it's not bad

if i was going for a 500mm lens today i would consider this one
    http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog/...sony-f563-lens

i don't think it was out when i bought mine so it wasn't an option it's a few quid more but it has image stablisation so you would expect it
