i was thinking about getting it for the car as it looks like im going to be out of a job in the next few weeks and the 2/3 jobs iva applied for are mostly traveling from place to place,

im glad theres some linux versions i feel lost when im on xp or vista ive used linux for that long lol (for the job ive got now ive been having to get used to using xp and vista as they are getting rid of the mac book pros' to save money and im used to running debian and ubuntu its still got osx on it but i barely use it)

i knew it was linpus m8 i just think its a shame that more laptops and not just the netbooks that are embracing the linux, the more people that buy a netbook running linux the more i think will make the switch (obviously not all of them) to linux full time, when they see that theres no virus/spyware/adware/malware problems its gotta be tempting rather then some people spending hard earned money on av protection

just put the full xp on and then tweak it .......

lets be fair, when xp came out i bet the pc you were using then was at best only half as powerfull as the acer you got now..

    min specs for xp...

    233ghz processor
64meg ram (128 if you dindnt want to disable stuff)
    1.5gig hd space..

it will run like a dream on the acer m8...

i was thinking the same about the acer being able to run most stuff its 10 times faster than my first 486 machine if not more and 100 times the ram lol i think people are looking at them as mini laptops but the truth is theyre propper laptops thats smaller and more portable,

if i was to dual boot anything with the linux thats on there itd have to be osx i know the msi wind can do it so im sure that the acer can lol

yeah m8 apple have gone all the way to ten and left windows behind on 6 lol, personally just through the time ive spent in linux os's over the years i just feel more at home in them same as im sure most people who run xp and other windows os's do, but osx comes pretty close although saying that i like vista so what do i know lol

personally i thought it may be slower than the speed of smell with osx installed but the truth is it doesnt look too bad
YouTube - OSX Leopard on Acer Aspire One Netbook Time Trial!

from what i can find the wifi, camera, card reader and sound dont work out of the box but they can be overcome with a little updating im still not 100% on the wifi i think the only option at the moment for it is to change the wifi card (taking the little thing apart though seems cruel lol) although if you do theres a few videos on tnkgrl showing it being taken apart they were done on qik so theyre not the best quality like this
    http://qik.com/video/161904
if you want a read at her site theres alsorts there from uping the ram to changing the hdd

i was going to plug in my tiny usb bluetooth adapter but after seeing how much of a mess i can make of a perfectly usable laptop by pulling it apart and soldering to the mobo (why cant americans and canadians say solder wtf is sorder?) i KNOW im going to use a tiny usb bluetooth adapter lol

most of the time im online i have df in another tab so i cant really comment (and my homepage on the iphone is df lol)

is there anything that you can reccommend uncrippling wise cos other than reading and adding the app to switch to the old and desktop and the acer installed thing ive not done anything to it yet (other than cover it in finger prints lol)

id had a read at it but thought "ill do the updates over wifi ...how long can it take its not windows is it?" lol 60 mins later i switched the wifi off cancelled the updates and went and plugged in the ethernet and its flying now (although it had to start again from scratch but thats no big deal it caught back up to where it was in 2mins lol

as soon as the updates are done im doing the advanced menu hack, its way better being able to switch to a normal desktop with terminal i tried updating firefox and twice i downloaded it and it couldnt install it so as soon as its done updating im sudo apt-get-ting my self an updated browser as well lol

hmm thats a shame although theres got to be a way around it (if not i may put ubuntu on it im sure theres either a dedicated version for the netbooks or if not i could roll my own) i thought when it wouldnt accept my bookmarks that a quick update should sort it -that could be a pain in the arse

i was using terminal to install before so never noticed, ive just got done reading the hoops that you have to jump through for the ff3 update and im not sure ff3 is worth all that when i can chuck ubuntu at it and have everything without any problems

if you feel like having a play with an uncrippled version of linux this one should be better although saying that there are some things thats not working 100% at the moment saying that though theres plenty of people working on it

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne

im not 100% jumping over to ubuntu just yet though im going to install ff3 and if it needs everything reinstalling and what not then i probably will, one thing i am doing though is getting the kde desktop on it the one they shipped with it is horrible it looks like its from the 90's lol
