Inte's current quad cores are not native quad cores their 2 dual cores glued together so to decrease heat output they clock them slightly lower.

Most games are single threaded and don't make use of multiple cores but naturally run slower on a lower clocked CPU.

Thing is though the higher the resolution is the less effect the CPU has. With a HD4850 at 1920x1200 I doubt there would be any difference at all between a E6750 and a Q6600 in most games and the Q6600 would benefit you in the few games that can take advantage of quad core like Supreme Commander.

Depending on the resolution your running the difference wouldn't be that dramatic between most dual and quad cores in games but multi threading game support in games is thin so if it comes down to money your best off getting a dual core but if your after what you think is the overall best solution I'd go with the quad core part.

    Thanks that's very helpful.

Think I'll price up a dual core with the ATI 4850 (do they do larger than 512mb with this card?)

Looks like there are loads of different dual core chips about. I'll start to look at these now.

There is a GB version of the card. The HD 4850 loves memory bandwidth it can go nuts with more bandwidth so its certainly a value proposition if you want to run at very high resolutions considering it's not that much more expensive but at lower resolutions the return wouldn't be so big.

If you want to overclock though the extra bandwidth would be nice.

    WONDERFUL !!

I try to explain this is the way to go to so many of my customers but they just will not have it.

The math shows you will get more juice from the E6750 - fantastic value too and a great overclocker - many have achieved 3.6ghz !! Of course the quad benefits if you do process heavy jobs like Video Editing / Encoding. But for value and bang for buck the E6750 is a winner ( you can even get great deals on the E6850 now )

here's a decent read re: crysis benchmarking http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2209093,00.asp

    thanks for vindicating me

I'll post a review on my new i7 kit as soon as I get it all built !

OK, I've just got a quote for the system and the guy has given me a few more options. Trouble is I can't find them listed. Anyone got any ideas of the specs of a:

    E 7050

and ATI (I think) 5900 ----- That seems like an old GeForce card to me ?

    Do you mean an E7200?

As for the GPU it's either an ATI 9500 instead of 5900 or an Nvidia FX 5900 which are both quite useless if you plan on doing much gaming nowadays.

    well i built my system

i got a q6600 in the end and its oc nicely to 3.4ghz on air
    4gb ocz vista gold ram
    and a sapphire 4870 512mb

my temps are very low considering the overclock i must say the case is amazing even though its not much look at its fantastic at cooling i think it might have something do with a 36 yes 36cm fan on the side what is quiet as f**k

mine come with a blow hole fan at the top and i also fitted a hiperflow fan at the back

can max all games at the moment out

crysis i drop it a little

my gfx card overclocked to 820mhz and 1100mhz ram

can encode a 700mb divx file to dvd files in 15 minutes dead at about 250fps and not even maxing all the cores out

    im impressed thanks guys

Shit that is a sweet case, with such big fans and lower RPM's there can't be much noise coming from it especially when its idling.

You should get him to clarify.

Are you building the computer yourself or is this guy building it for you?

I'm just thinking if your building it yourself ,you shouldn't really stick with this guy, you should hit some of those price comparison sites and find yourself some bargains, with a set up that would give you a lot more options.

An E7050 could be a typo, but I really wouldn't recommend purchasing a FX 5900 Ultra. It is a significantly old card, if your looking to save on the GPU, there are a lot of better options for not much more.
