Tech Windows 7 compatible with low-end machines

Microsoft seems to have taken a lesson from the reluctance of SMEs to upgrade to its Vista operating system when designing Windows 7.

Vista, which runs on machines with at least 40GB of storage, 1GB of memory and a 1GHz 32- or 64-bit processor, has been out of reach for many budget-stretched businesses, but Microsoft is keen to point out that Windows 7 will work on low-end machines.

The Windows 7 operating system was revealed to developer this week at the Windows Hardware Engineering conference in Los Angeles.

The OS does, however, promise a host of improvements, including faster boot times and easier management of peripheral devices through a feature called Devices and Printers.

On higher end machines it provides touch-screen interaction with the Windows 7 Start menu, Windows Taskbar and Windows Explorer icons.

By the time it's release the same Vista minimum spec machines will be the "low-end" machines they are talking about!

MS have to realise that less is more. Apple and Linux are going to take over unless this lesson is learned.

Vista in itself wasn't bad, but the GUI was over done, and unnecessary IMO. Drivers are what lets Vista down.

Vista has turned out to be a repeat of ME.

Windows 7 has promised to be the fix for Vista but they are not going to release it as a Service pack they are going a new version.

It will be written on Power Shell as well so should be awesome for control. It will also tie in better with Windows 7 server which is actually Windows 2008 R2 due for release the same time. Both are due between July 09 and Feb 10 but i think that it will be more like Feb 10.....

    That's interesting news.
There is no way Vista will run on the 150 odd Pc's I manage, so I will follow this one closely.

A crappy sub domain here at work with only 20 odd P3 machines, running WinXP FLP and an old 2000 server runs better than our main network!

Win7 will have to do a lot to convince me too!

Note... In all the reports, no-one ever defines what a "Low end Machine" is.... me wanders why? I suspect a "MS low end machine" is very different what you and me would call a "low end machine"

Whilst I agree that MS don't mention specs, I would imagine that they will be Low end as we see it.

With the rise of mini-notebooks like the Asus Eee PC, Acer One, MSI Wind etc MS will be wanting to keep their OS as an option for shipping with these machines.

As MS are no longer producing Windows XP which a lot of these mini-notebooks are capable of running they need to produce something that will work.

The last thing they will want is to loose users to Linux, and with no viable MS OS to go onto these laptops at present (The current allocation of XP OEM licenses won't lastr forever), MS need to pull their finger out fast.

Bear in mind that the latest version of Microsoft Server (2008) has the option to run with just a CLI and no GUI.

What has actaully surprised me is the number of people buying these mini-notebooks with Linux pre-installed.
