can't get my new pc to boot from usb arghh!!:-/

hi

just built a new base unit, transfered the via 6421 card over installed the drivers (cheers maltloaf). ran iprep, selected the via card, sammy firmware and formatted and made bootable.

wen't into the bios and theres a few options for usb, usb hdd, usb fdd, usb zip and usb cdrw, i assume its usb zip as the others are the floppy, harddrive and cd/dvd drive.

selected as first boot device usb zip, restarted and it just boots to xp as normal.

so wen't back in and selecetd the secondary and thrid boot devices to disabled to see if that did anything, but still boots just to xp.

so turned it off and disconnected the harddrive and cd drive, hoping it would force it to boot from usb, and it the just sits at "boot from cd" in dos.

have also tried going stright to boot menu and selecting usb zip but still nothing.

i've even tried selecting all the other usb options fdd, hdd etc just incase, and moving the usb stick from the front usb ports to the rear ones.

its recognising the stick as it comes up as sony usb on boot up.

motherboard is a gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h

any other ideas guys??

I'm a bit lost as to why you've got so many options... Normally in BIOS you can just select "portable device". That's what you want, not any of the usb things you listed. Have a look to see if that's an option, and if so, try again.

this is taken from the manual, these are the options available to me

"First/Second/Third Boot Device
Specifies the boot order from the available devices. Use the up or down arrow key to select a
device and press to accept. Options are: Floppy, LS120, Hard Disk, CDROM, ZIP,
USB-FDD, USB-ZIP, USB-CDROM, USB-HDD, Legacy LAN, Disabled."

i think the point is mate, hes trying to get his pc to read/write firmware to a dvd drive of a 360 so no its in the right section, other wise it would of been moved by now!

with my pc in the bios i had to power usb on start up it was a setting gave me probs for ages till i found it

found in the end i had 2 probs.

1 was the bloody usb flash drive i was using was tits, even though i only used it a couple of weeks ago for the same thing and it was fine.

2 if the mobo's set to achi in the bios, for some reason it won't boot to usb.

anyway, all sorted now cheers for all the help guys

My Phoenix Bios also comes up with those options, But when I save to say USB-Zip disable all the others it just comes up with "enter bootable disk and press enter" Nothing seems to work. I have no option to f12 to get a boot sequence menu. Both my old pc's will not do it is there something I am missing. Can I upgrage my BIOS to boot from USB? Or is the best option to get a newer PC? Need a quick solution as might buy a PC today.....

make sure you try all the usb ports

Yeah they only have 2 ports tried both. Both PC's I have tried are quite old, probs 8 years old.

in my asus biso i have to select the usb as the main hdd for some resone

Try pressing F11 to get the boot menu. Buying a new one is up to you but if it is really old might be a good idea anyway. Did you look in the BIOS for ?USB power options as suggested by rids?

There's the boot sequence, but there's also an option for boot priority. Find that and ensure that the USB is listed 1st. Can't remember what section it's in now though

u will need to have your usb in the slot when u turn it on and like mentiond befor make sure you have power to the usb on probly in power mangemnet
usb controle is in intergrated perifarals and then onboard divices
