if you go to a folder and press triangle does it give you the option to 'show all'? If it does do that it should show the files?

I had similar problems a while back, I could'nt get it to work at all with XP and media player 11. But once a new comp arrived with Vista it worked fine. That was until I changed firewalls, I had to drop the firewall and it worked fine (pinpointing the problem to the firewall). A setting on the firewall (Easy setting instead of advanced) also did the trick.

I was using TVersity for a while on the PS3. I've changed to a share now on my Linux box. Works fine but TVersity was better over wirless as it would transcode to a slightly lower bitrate.
